Niagara Falls questions
 

Hello,
Can anyone recommend some great hotels to stay at the Niagara Falls, preferably on the US side? Its going to be a sort of last minute reservation (lazy), so what sort of places should I be calling? (motels or major chains)? This is going to be for the 4th of July weekend.

2nd question: what is the procedure for US citizens to cross into the Canadian side? Do I need to carry anything besides a drivers license ? Is there any problem driving a US registered car across the border? Thanks for any info.

I don't know about hotels, but driving between the US and Canada is no prob. You should have either a passport or a certified copy of your birth certificate with you (although, I've never had to show mine). Also, FYI, the gift shop at the Falls will take credit/debit cards, but to take the actual tours, you will need cash! There are no ATMs on the island, either. Have fun! Bring spare shoes and socks because you will get WET!

All the nice hotels/motels/restaurants are on the Canadian side (better view of the falls and better economics). The US side is rather grim.

number_6 is right - the Canadian side is better, with a better view (you are facing the falls from Canada) and also casinos, and better restaurants, although there is/used to be a good Indian restaurant on the main street on the US side, half of which stands empty. My friend and I stayed on the US side a few years back, and as I recall, we just simply popped in to a guesthouse, as there are all kinds of people who rent rooms to tourists, while there aren't many regular hotels on the US side. The Maid in the Mist is a must...

There is nothing on the American side.
Do yourself a favour and cross over the Rainbow Bridge into Canada, you will find tons of motels and hotels around the falls and on Lundy's Lane.
The view is much better, there is way more to do entertainment wise. And dont forget, you are carrying the almighty US dollar, which means you are you are getting 1.50+ in Canadian pesos for each one!

Driving in is no problem, but you should have a birth cirtificate or a passport, a drivers license is not enough.

10+ years ago we stayed at the Oakes Inn, very close to the Hoseshoe Falls on the Canadian side. Fantastic view out the window. Get a high floor.

We stayed at the Marriott a couple of years back and it was absolutely amazing. Wonderful view of the falls and a fireplace in our room. An easy shot down the hill to actually walk around the falls.

I was driving an Ontario registered rental car when I crossed the Niagara River into New York. The officer on the US side asked where I was born and I told him Sacramento, CA. He then made a remark about the Ontario license plates and asked if I had documentation to prove US citizenship. Fortunately I had my passport with me so there were no further issues.

Go Canadian. Many really nice new hotels over there with great views, great prices and a very favorable exchange rate. Do a "search" on the various hotel forums for "niagara" or whatever.
