Trinidad and Tobago?

Looks like I'm off to Tobago and Trinidad in August with the family. All advice and recommendations from those in the know would be much appreciated. Must sees and dos? Best experiences? Is "Sunday School" in Tobago all it's cracked up to be? Good snorkeling spots? I welcome all input.

I found this one less than glowing report in the Caribbean forum: http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...ML/000014.html . I also remember seeing something over in the Hilton forum. Where will you be staying?

Thanks for the reply, cactuspete. We'll be in Trinidad since the AA flight from MIA arrives late and leaves early, forcing overnights coming and going. We are spending the remainder of the time in Tobago. We have no accommodations reserved at this time. I know Hilton is on both islands. For the most part it seems we'll be getting down and dirty, which means staying in rock-bottom places around Tobago. This is the type of adventure we like. But, I still want to be as informed as possible in advance. There is very little info available about Tobago, since it is somewhat off the beaten path. Has anyone on this board been there?

We have only been as far south as the Grenadines, but you may want to check out the book "The Sailor's Guide to the Windward Islands". It's at my house right now, but I think it covers Tobago as well. Also, the Lonely Planet travel guides are always good for "down and dirty".

Have fun!

Check out the author V.S. Naipaul. He is considered one of the best english language authors of the 20th century, yet remains relatively unknown. I believe that he is from Trinidad, and some of his writings might give you some insights from a native who now lives in Britain. His friendship and ensuing spat with the writer Paul Theroux is told from Theroux's perspective in "Sir Vidia's Shadow". Some of Naipaul's books you might enjoy are "A House for Mr. Biswas", "A Bend in the River" and "Guerillas".

Did he not get this year's Nobel prize for Literature ? http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif I thought he was very well read in the old colonial countries, as well as in the Commenwealth nations http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif

Perhaps I should amend it to "relatively unknown in this country"... http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...m/rolleyes.gif
