Allowable Alcohol Carryon
I noticed in the issue of AA flight magazine yesterday the the allowable limit for a bottle of carry-on alcohol is anything under 140 proof. Is that the same on all airlines? Would I be hassled by security personel who might not know that?

Someone claimed on a American Eagle flight only 80 proof. When I flew out San Juan was told 120 proof. Was told 151 rum has been ban from all commerical flights for over 2 years.
People returning from the Carribean carryon often several bottles & I haven't heard of any problems. |
Just make sure the bottles are not opened. I didn't realize it until last week that you can not carry on any opened bottles of wine or liquor. Has it always been like this, or is this a post 9/11 measure? Sitting at a bar across from security in Vail last week, I must have seen 10 bottles of half full vodka, wine, etc. dumped out by the security guys.

I am not sure about opened or unopened. As far as I know the rule is that whatever alcohol is served must be served to you by the airline. Thus, if you bring your own on board and a F/A is willing to take it and serve it to you, your fine.

carrying around actual bottles of alcohol is a risky proposition. they can break and you also call attention to yourself.
i typically travel with a camelbak full of whatever i'm on for the week. typically its red wine, but once i ran out, and took scotch. the security folks always make me take a draught of what i have. wime is easy, you just tell em it's fruit juice (the camelbak tube turns red) and take a healthy swig. with the scotch, i had to do it and not wince or let my eyes water, which was tough. you should also check out the thread about traveling alcoholics too. there might be good advice on how to stay drunk for most of your trip. im seldom sober after about 11am, if youre curious. theres just no reason to be... |

Isn't 100 proof the dividing line between flammable and non-flammable booze? This could be a rationale for permitting the lower-proof varieties.

You actually sold someone that scotch was fruit juice?? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

i told em it was organic apple juice, and looked funny. also (and this is important) ALWAYS offer them some. they will get grossed out, and want to get rid of you.
