The irony, of course, was that i *wasn't* desperate, so the thing showed up so fast.

I'm guessing that there must be some added speed in actually going to the passport office, and probably in that if your application is enough of an elegant mess, they're more than happy enough to send it to...um, Rochester, NH is where they issue them now? Future adult renewals will at least be easier, though i'm sort of hoping i won't have to bring my mother with me next time to verify that i exist. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Any estimates for recent passport renewal processing times without paying for expedited service? Thanks.

Renewed La Cochinita's passport - sent to Passport Services on 31-Jan by regular first class mail, received new passport (and old one) back on 13-Feb. Just under two weeks.

When you really need a passport fast, their expedite service is great. I got a passport in a few days. You just have to supply some documentation showing a pressing need, and pay the fees. They are extraordinarily quick. I've had experience in Washington DC office and also in LA.
