Panama?

Has anyone been there recently?
What's it like?
How cheap and safe is it?
What's the US military presence like?

In latin america, I've been to Costa Rica, Venezuela, Peru, and Mexico, so please feel free to compare them to Panama.
I'm going to be based in Panama City for a few months this summer, so any specific info about the city would also be greatly appreciated!
