Rome Hotels
 

I will be visiting Rome with a group in June 2002 and have a choice of 3 hotels. If anyone has stayed at any of these hotels, your advice would be MOST appreciated by us all.

De La Ville Intercontinental
Hilton Cavalieri
Marriott Grand Flora

We stayed at the Marriott Grand Flora in March, and had no complaints (other than the price http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif ). It is well located at the top of the Via Veneto overlooking at park (? Borghesse ?). I remember the Hilton being described as somewhat isolated from the sightseeing part of town (which was our main interest), and I no information about the Intercontinental.
P. S.: The only creepy thing about the Marriot Grand Flora is that the building was once an SS headquarters during the war.

The Intercontinental is at the top of the Spainish Steps. It's a nice hotel in a reasonable location. Rome is a very large city, so you can say a lot of hotels are reasonably situated. If you like shopping, it's steps from the Rodeo Drive of Rome. Other than the Via Veneto, the Via Condoti, the Rodeo Drive, is a interesting area to walk around in the evening. There are a lot of nice restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. The Intercontinental has regular promotions each summer which make their rates attractive.

While the Intercontinental has no grounds, the Hilton sits on a large piece of land -- it's kind of a resort. They also have complimentary bus service to various places. It's very near the Vatican.

I've stayed at both. It's hard to say which is better -- price should be a determinate.

I spent a week at the IC last year. It is in a great location and has very good service. However, it is an older property and not very modern. I am a member of IC's SCC and received an upgrade to a larger room with a small balcony overlooking the courtyard.

If I had to do it again, I would stay at the Marriott. Although it may not appear convenient, there is an entrance to the subway system across the Via Veneto. Additionally, the gardens of Villa Borghese are across the street from the hotel.

I agree with Doc. Not only is the Hilton walking distance to nowhere, including the Vatican, it is in need of an overhaul.

My colleagues stayed at the De La Ville Intercontinental and had nothing but good things to say about it - the location was remarkable (practically on top of the Spanish Steps) and particularly the concierge service. When I went to Rome shortly thereafter I stayed at a smaller place down the street from here, but stopped in. It is absolutely Deluxe. I was told that some of the higher rooms have great views of Rome and there is a roof terrace for all the guests to use. And they were right - the location was tops.
