A $220 excursion fare in 1976 is $623 in 2001 dollars.

Thank you, RAD, for the calculation. Air travel is cheaper in real dollar terms than it was in 1976!
Here's one more: in the summer of 1976 I took a complicated 11-leg flight on 6 or 8 airlines, mostly priced as an excursion, for $1100 (about $3000 in today's dollars?): PDX-SEA-CPH-PAR, then a gap, then PAR-AMS-Stavanger, then a gap, then Stavanger-LHR-JFK, then a gap, then LGA-Roanoke, then a gap, then Roanoke-LGA-ORD-PDX, at one time or another flying on United, SAS, Air France, Pan Am, Piedmont, American, and maybe one more that I've forgotten. This I think might be more expensive in real dollars for peak-season travel. |

Three cheers for deregulation!
