Traffic Flow at Niagara Falls
I will be staying in Niagara Falls, Canada Renaissance during the July 4 week and am wondering what the traffic might be like across the Rainbow Bridge to the US in the morning and returning to the Canadian side in late afternoon or evening. Are there typically long delays regardless of direction? Thanks for any assistance.

I spent a night in Niagara Falls a few weeks ago to get in an inexpensive mileage stay. This was not a major holiday, so that would be different. On the way into Cananda, the delay was about 30 seconds - pulled up to the booth, answered two to three questions, that was it.
Returning to the states we had a car ahead of us that was questioned for about 5 minutes than pulled off to the side. when we got up to the booth, it was again only a couple of questions. I'm sure that you'll get some resposnes from some Buffalo area or Ontario, Cananda residents with more details, but even on the busiest days the wait may be long, but you'll have no trouble going over in the mornign returning in the afternoon. |
The traffic delay can easily be over an hour in both directions on a holiday weekend. With the Canadian holiday being celebrated on Monday, and our holiday being on Wednesday, I would imagine the early part of the week would be worst.
Depending on what your destination is in the US, an alternative could be to simply walk across the bridge. You get a great view of the Falls, and the pedestrian line for customs is usually very short. Enjoy your trip! |
If your destination is downtown Buffalo proper or any of the southern parts of the area, an alternative might be to cross at the Peace Bridge at Ft. Erie. I travel this route somewhat regularly, and the delays are always greater at the Rainbow bridge. If you are going North, you can use the Lewiston Bridge. The Rainbow bridge seems to get the most traffic because of the falls and the casino, so if you use either of these "back doors" it could save you some considerable time.
