fallinasleep, thank you very much for noticing all my recent travel problem!
I just want people out there to be aware what they are paying for. I bet some people don't even realize that they are being charged for maps, mayo or ketchup. Customer should have right to know what they are being charged before they purchase, not after!! unless they are trying to cheat...thats another story!

I've NEVER come across fast food restaurants that charge for mayo or ketchup. I've used many restaurants in AMsterdam & what has been said must be an isolated example.

The prices are good, and have never felt like I'm getting ripped off.

Like in any major urban center, there will exist incidents that should NOT be overgeneralized to the whole city or country.

hobmom, very funny. The Dutch can tell good jokes on themselves, and they do laugh about their own frugality. My best friend is Dutch and her neice told me another joke. This joke is told by a Belgian as there is strong competition between the two as to who can tell the worst joke about the other:

How did the Belgian know where the Dutchman lived?
He saw the toilet paper hanging on the line to dry. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

How was the Grand Canyon Formed? When 2 Dutchmen started fighting over a nickel.

Seriously, though, their frugality must be the reason why it's financially one of the strongest countries in the world. Their investments in the US is, I believe, 2nd only to Japan.

Frugality & humility can speak volumes--especially when addressing the Dutch.

Recent Ducth story on Frugality:

I recently signed up for INGDirect's 5% savings deposit, as it is a VERY good rate. ING, as some of you know, is one of thebiggest banks in the world & have one of the highest, if not the highest, credit rating of any bank in the world. So I know my money will be safe there.

I recently called them up and asked WHY they DON'T offer a checking account, since it's rather a minor pain to do the ACH (?) transfers from their saving account to your other bank's checking account.

A Dutch customer service rep answered my question saying: ING doesn't like to WASTE money on checking accounts since they're the MOST EXPENSIVE services a bank issues out to you. He said, "We let the other guys waste their money, & we pass the savings onto you."

He said matter of factly "We're better in business than the other banks & we don't spend our money on crazy services". He also said this is "the way it is" and figuratively said "take it or leave it."

Ok, I'll take it! But, Wow, talk about "frugal" attitude. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
