Delhi duty free
 

This was inadvertently placed in the UNited forum.I'll be stopping over in Delhi later this month and would like to know if there were any worthwhile things to buy in the Delhi airport.I can remember in the past some mention of great deals in glassware in one Indian Airport but I can't remember which one.

Forget it. No good deals at all unless the rupee suddenly plunges and you pay rupee rates convereted to Dollars

Thought I'd move my reply up from the United board as well, in case anyone other than Ozflier was interested in reading it.

As far as I remember -- overpriced, at least by Indian standards. One incident at DEL particularly sticks in my memory -- I had a few hundred rupees left and was looking for something small to buy to get rid of the rupees. The problem is, a lot of places past passport control don't take rupees! One shop was selling chocolate bars, with "Rp. 40" printed ostensibly on the package. "Do you take rupees?" I asked. "Yes." "I'll take two of the chocolates." "600 rupees." "But it says 40 rupees each on the package." "We operate on a 'dollar' basis here."
Needless to say, I skipped the chocolates and went home with my rupees as a souvenir. Some shops might have decently priced stuff -- but I would bet you can get the same stuff at far better prices outside the airport.

I agree with the other posters here. Unless there is a specific speciality item, DELHI airport is not a good place for shopping. It is understandable that most airport stores are more expensive than the city stores, but the shops at Delhi have little distinctive selection (a niche for example) to recommend themselves. You can get most of what you find in DEL at for much cheaper at importers in western countries (say CostPlus world of Imports or even KMarts and Targets in the US).

Of course, if you step into the city or better still get out of the city, you can find excellent value.
