PIT: What to do for the day?
 

I'll have a 11 hour layover in Pittsburgh in May. Just curious what there is to do except wander downtown to take in the Andy Warhol Museum, Andrew Carnegie and Mellon stuff, Fallingwater, and cablecars? I have reserved a car from Dollar at a princely rate of $15.

Wouldn't Falling Water be about a 1.5-2 hour drive from PIT. Nonetheless, it is an 11 hour layover and Frank Lloyd Wright.

For a day you've listed a good itinerary there. Go a little bit past downtown to the strip and you can sample many ethnic food delicacies, and also hit the Heinz Regional History Center, which is pretty interesting.

Fallingwater is 1.5-2 hours as chexfan stated. Their hours of operation are pretty limited so check the website or call them if you decide to go. You can pre-book a new special tour they offer -- pretty expensive (around $100, I believe) but if you are a Wright buff than it might be worth it.

Since you are coming in May, probably before Memorial Day, Kennywood and the other area amusement parks will probably not be open. But you can check their websites and see if you are into that sort of thing. Kennywood will have a new extension to their marquee Steel Phantom open this season.

If you just want to kill some time, there are several miniature golf and bowling places around the airport and area -- let me know if you want some directions. There's also a large shopping center not too far from the airport (Century III) and several movie theaters.

Down in Homestead (about 20-30 minutes from the airport) there is a new Dave & Buster's (arcade and other entertainment) along with a brand new (and supposedly very nice) Lowes movie theater. I've wasted many a hours and much much money at that Dave & Buster's perfecting my skills at '18 Wheeler'. Battletech is fun too -- but again darn expensive.

And of course lets not forget PNC Park. While it may not work it in your layover, if you have the opportunity to visit the magnificent new stadium (we won't talk about the team that PLAYS there) you should. The Carnegie Science Center nearby is also neat and undergoing an expansion; tho admittedly it's a bit more for the kiddies.

Finally, if I'm in town I'll be happy to meet you at a McDonalds <grin>

1. Go to all the US Airways Clubs and see which one has the best layout.

2. Go again to all the US Airways Clubs and compare the sizes and number of TV's.

3. Go again to all the US Airways Clubs and count the number of seats and compare to the maximum capacity sign at the door.

Note: You cannot go to each club just once and do each of these things...you must go to all the clubs for #1 without doing #2/#3, then go back to all the clubs and do #2, etc.

4. See how many times you can go between the "X" terminal and the main terminal/E-Gates in an hour.

Still have more time?

5. Repeat #3 to make sure you counted all the chairs correctly.

6. Repeat #4 and try to beat that number. Once you've beaten it, keep trying to beat it again. Etc.

Some good things mentioned. If you tell us 'locals' which specific day, we can be more helpful. Feel free to email me personally if you're worried about saying this in public.

The Fallingwater trip will take up most of your day and is a nice option assuming the weather complies.

And the local shopping area is 'Robinson Town Center' not Century III. RTC is 10 mins from airport.

I have season tickets to Pirates/PNC Park. If I know better which day you're around, maybe I can help. But most likely you would need a day game. What are the times of your layover?

I have a decent layover in PIT on Easter weekend and I may just try to do this myself!

I should have been clearer; I meant 'enclosed mall' instead of shopping center which of course the nearest one to the airport is Century III. Once The Mall at Robinson is built obviously that will be closest (its on the landing path http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif)

chexfan, if you have a long enough layover take a cub or bus out to the mall. The bus stops right at IKEA (15 minutes door to door) and that's about as good a place as any to kill an hour or so.

I'll be outside PIT this weekend ... actually, I am going to fly into CLE, get picked up by another referee, and then drive to Grove City College for the East Coast Collegiate Southern Divisional Water Polo Championships on Friday and Saturday.

At the time I needed to buy my ticket, JAN-PIT-JAN was $440 and JAN-CLE-JAN was $230.
