MIA - NRT nonstop?
 

Does anyone know if this route could be served as a nonstop with current fleet capabilities? If so, why doesn't AA start it up?

I don't think the problem is range. CO flies 8060 miles NS to HKG. EWR-NRT is only 6700 and the difference between EWR and MIA is less. The real problem I think is that you just can't decide to fly to Japan. You need bou US and Japanese governmental approval and this is a political issue. I would not hold my breath.

Miami to Narita is 7459 miles. That's a long flight, certainly in the same ballpark with the longest flights on earth, but not quite as long as the current champion, Newark to Hong Kong. When United starts flying non-stop between JFK and Hong Kong on Sunday, that flight will be the new champion at 8071 miles. So MIA-NRT is certainly possible, but getting rights is the problem.

Beyond the rights, there would be very little feed. The route would be relying entirely on local MIA-NRT traffic in addition to, of course, AA's heavy South American network. I'm not sure if Latin America and the local traffic would be enough to support it. Of course, the lack of landing slots, the relatively low priority this route would have when landing slots do open up, etc., would block it before they even started considering the traffic.
