I'd have to give the nod to Tumi, I have been travelling with the same Tumi luggage for about 9 years, and the original wheels are still on. (big 26" old fashioned suitcase) I also have the small carry on with wheels, and that too has been through a lot!

I thought I would try something different, and go for the Sampsonite with the hard bottom, soft top (carbon series) and really like it, but they haven't proven themselves over time yet. Will let all of you know after 8 more years http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

If price is not a factor, Tumi is the way to go!

2 many miles

I had a similar problem with a shoulder strap for my 7 year old tumi bag. I went into a Norstroms (I didn't purchase my bag from a dept. store) and they just handed me a new strap--even through it was obviously from a newer model. The new shoulder strap is more comfortable than the old one too!
The sales guy said he would take care of sending mine back to the company. Tumi/norstroms has great customer service. You might want to try and get a new strap for your old bag if you think you might still use it.

Does anyone have suggestions for a rolling computer case, mine broke yesterday in the airport http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Sounds like the Tumi is a great bag, I know a couple friends that have them and they have held up great. I like the Briggs & Riley though because they have a lifetime replacement warranty and unlike Tumi et al. they will replace or repair it no matter how the damage was caused including by the airlines. This probably isn't quite as big a deal if you always carry it on and have control over its handling, but i routinely check mine on the return if I have other luggage as well so it takes quite a bit of abuse.

Also my luggage store called a couple weeks ago and informed me that Briggs has a new design out that has a one handed handle release, fixing my one real problem with the bags.

mre2b9--If you still have that Briggs & Riley case with the two handed release and want to trade up e-mail me, I am looking for one for my wife.

I've had my Travel Pro for 4 years with no problems.
I just bought a Eagle Creek roll on that also turns into a backpack. This is for my trips to areas of the world when a roll on doesn't work, cobble stone roads, getting on and off ferry boats in the Greek Islands and places that only have stairs instead of elevators or escalators. I won't use this bag for my weekly flights, but I am starting to see them more and more in the airports.

Rachel:

Tumi has a line of "Wheel-A-Way Computer Briefs": http://www.tumi.com

From the main menu, click on Product Directory then select "Wheel-A-Way Computer Briefs" from the drop down menu (Choose a Category).

The Mile Dog:

It seems that the manufacturer/retailer relationship can be a key factor in determining what damage will be covered under a warranty. My large Tumi bag has sustained airline damage twice and, in both instances, the repairs were done with no charge. The retailer said, "No problem..." when I brought the bag in and explained the circumstances; apparently they have an excellent working relationship with Tumi.

I have a generic roll-on (Ciao) that I picked up on sale at Target about 4 years ago. It has the ballistic nylon, heavy duty zippers and metal screws with roller blade wheels. I think I paid $59 for it and I fly about 60 segments a year. It is in great shape and I couldn't be happier with it.

When it comes to most all types of luggage, IMO there are three options. 1) Tumi, 2) Tumi, and 3) Tumi. The other brand I use is Rimowa, those alluminum suitcases that have excellent internal dividers. Sure, cost more $$ upfront, but you enjoy excellent quality and service.

When I think of Tumi I think of three things 1)Pricy 2)Pricy and 3)Pricy!

I have a Samsonite roller luggage that I check in everytime, been with me since last year and still in great shape, I paid $120 for it.

There MUST be a good rollaboard out there !!

I am struggling. Bought a Travelpro in 1995 and another in 2003. They were fantastic bags and can't complain that each lasted for 7-8 years. However, the new Travelpro bags are flimsy. I bought a Tumi Alpha (yes for $600) and was stunned at the poor quality. The retractable handle broke after 6 weeks and Tumi will only look at it if YOU pay to ship it back. They are a "luxury" brand and you get better customer service at Walmart. There is a boutique brand out of Montana called Red Ox, and they make truly outstanding luggage, but they don't have a rolling suiter.

Can anyone else suggest a 3 day rolling suiter ? I do about 200,000 miles a year .. I think I am more stressed about finding the right carry on than I was about my last car purchase.

Thanks in advance.

About $110.00

I have the same. I didn't get it in black, so I can actually find it when I get forced to check it.

My only complaint about it is that the wheels are not flush with the back of it - they stick out some. Makes it harder to fit in the carry on bag size checker things.

Besides that, though, mine is ~3 years old and still works great.

I can't speak to the quality of other brands - but the Kirkland one is solid in my book.

Tumi apologists will blame the victim in three, two, one...

If I bought a $600 bag which broker after 6 weeks, I would be looking to get my $600 back, not a repair...

This thread is now about 10 years old. In the interim, there have been new products and new threads and, indeed a new Forum.(Travel Products)
I suggest that anyone looking for current information on the "Best Carry-On-Rollaboard, please check out the Travel Products Forum on Flyertalk. This Forum is a great resource.
Time, now to put this old thread to bed.
