Sydney travel Tips?

Will be taking my first international flight in March (ATL/LAX/SYD). Any tips for the long flight (in coach).

Hotel recommendations in Sydney? Right now planning on the Novotel Darling Habour, but would really like someplace with internet connection.

Thanks.

Welcome to your first post Dad2ADD. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Current discussion about SYD Hotels is at:

Those ***** will run you all of $US70 a night, taxes included. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Novotel is "sort" of central, but is not really if you want to do most tourist things. As to surviving 20 hours in coach, take lots of sleeping tablets with you is the only answer. Or get upgraded. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Thanks, I have been following that thread. I will be in for a conference and transportation will be provided from the Novotel, Ibis or Grand Mercure. I have been recommended the Novotel.

Dad .. all 3 adjoin each other, and are the ONE hotel group!

I second Glen that these 3 are one hotel group and pretty much the same hotel really. Food in restaurants is nothing to jump about, especially since they allow half price dicount coupons which attract sometimes not the best crowd with limited dining manners. There is also the casino almost next door with its free buses to the city and all suburbs of Sydney, so if you want a free ride then go for it.

Where would you guys recommend for $100 US a night?

YVR Cockroach Jan 25, 2001 9:26 pm

Id' add that the Ibis rooms are very much like shoe boxes in shape with a size reminescent of European hotels (which it arguebly is). The rooms in the Novotel are slightly larger and a bit more interesting.

No real bargains right now but if you want to pay USD$100, the Marriott has some good rates around that range, a bit more and they'll throw in breakfast.

A ***** at $70 inc. taxes as posted above being "no real bargain" is a matter of value judgment I guess. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Thanks, the Marriott Renaissance Sydney Hotel looks like a much better choice than the hotels recommended by the conference.

Each time in SYD, I have stayed at the Hotel Inter-Continental. For about $20 increase in room fee, you are put in the Executive Floors, where you get roundtrip transfer from airport to hotel via private car, and also a great breakfast in the morn.

If you have to travel LAX-SYD in coach, try the QF lunchtime flight -- it's just as long, but more bearable as most of it's daytime. Plus you can just go to bed when you arrive in Sydney. My favourite hotel is (was? I heard it was being converted into apartments) the Sebel Townhouse in Elizabeth Bay (a bit out of the centre, but that means you can see more of Sydney, right)? Great service, all mod cons, and a rate of around A$180 per night including breakfast.

I like the Avillion at Liverpool and Pitt -- especially the concierge floor. Fine four-star comfort, decent location on the fringe of the Central Business District, and an excellent price.

The Sebel Town house is basically on the 'seedy' end of Kings Cross and is a mile or 2 from the "city". Not a terribly safe part of town to wandering about in at night. Lots of heroin druggies etc on the side streets. It is 100 yards from this restaurant we took Rudi to (in the main street I hasten to add!) last weekend, see report:

Glen, I certainly hope that you don't classify yourself as a seedy person since you knew so well where to take Rudi in that area... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif BTW, US$6 for a stripshow isn't that bad...

How about the "All Seasons Premier Menzi"

Looks like a nice hotel, with internet access in each room. Not sure of the location though.
