Longest transatlantic flight.
What is the longest transatlantic flight? Is it FRA-SFO?
|
Certainly there are longer ones...even LHR-LAX is longer.

One way only but the JNB-N. America (FLL or ATL?) must be the longest.
|
Does FRA-MEX count? 5943 miles...

JNB-JFK return non-stop... 7963miles.

I thought that through some twist of the great circle idea that JNB-ATL is actually longer than JNB-JFK... I could be wrong though, it's happened before.
|
JNB-ATL is 8440 miles...
|
Are you talking non-stop, direct, scheduled, seasonal or what? Most planes have maximum ranges of between 7000 and 8000 miles.
Do you want to count the good old days when flying took avoer 28 hours in prop planes?? |
If we are talking about nonstop flights (which would make more sense), I recall that the South African Airways JNB-ATL flight has a technical stop at Cape Verde. The return flight though is ATL-CPT (Cape Town) nonstop, approximately 8100 miles, then continuing to JNB. Originally posted by kempis: JNB-ATL is 8440 miles... |
A flight has to be non-stop in both directions and operated throughout the year to be considered a scheduled non-stop.

So may replies... Thanks. If I change the question to the longest transatlantic flight to and from North America or the US, what would the answer be? Is LHR-LAX longer than FRA-SFO? Should FRA-LAX be longer than LHR-LAX then?
|
SFO/ZRH is 5826
LAX/ZRH is 5939 LAX/MXP is 6037 I don't think that Olympic Airways, Turkish Airways, Aeroflot, El Al, or FinnAir have any west coast gateways, so I think that LAX/MXP is going to be the longest scheduled non-stop from the US to Europe. Of course, if the requirement is just transatlantic from the US, then South Africa is fare game, and it would have the longest flights. |
My vote for North Atlantic goes to
LAX (33°56'33"N 118°24'29"W)-MXP (45°22'N 08°26'E) 6042 miles http://www.chicago.com/cgi-bin/gc?PA...st&RANGE-COLOR For South Atlantic BUE-FRA FRA (50°01'N 08°20'E) BUE (34°29'S 58°19'W) 7098 mi http://www.chicago.com/cgi-b in/gc?PATH=fra-bue%2Ccdg-bue%2Clhr-bue%0D%0A&RANGE=&PATH-COLOR=&PATH-UNITS=mi&RANGE-STYLE=best&RANGE-COLOR=&MAP-STYLE= [This message has been edited by Droneklax (edited 02-06-2001).] |
LAX to Moscow on Aeroflot==>6037 miles.
The flights to South Africa should not count because they are not non-stop in both directions. |
But don't the flights to Moscow stop in SNN?
