Tipping FA's....
 

Anyone ever actually given a tip (ie: cash) to an FA? (no, I don't know how I thot of this)

I spoke with an FA on a transpacific flight about this; she said they're not allowed to take $$ tips from passenger for any kinds of favor they did, simply because it's their job. (of course, some pax would abuse this privillege but..that's another thread http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif)

On DL or UA, there used to be this small booklet of coupons (someone remind me what they're called...) that they sent out to the frequent flyer members, which you could hand out to an FA for his/her exceptional service. They (the FAs) usually would react very positively to this, so you could treat this like your money tips.

The FA can then fill out this coupon with his/her employee ID and then forward it to HR/Corporate. Perhaps then it would be duly noted in their personnel records.

I still have a few UA booklets called "Service in Every Sense"; the print date on the back is 10/98. After some otherwise rather dismal customer service in MXP last May, I was treated fairly well by an agent and offered her one of the certs if she still thought they were any good. She thought about it a moment and decided to take one.

AA has something called "You're SomeOne Special" cards, (AKA SOS2000). You give out these cards to AA employees, and he/she is rewarded from AA.

I think "thanking" someone good is really need and make me happy too! Everytime I asked to connect to supvervisor and say goodness when a Reservation agent treat me well and work hard to work out my route/fare. I want to extend this to face to face contact AA staff.

I have photocopied those UA coupons so I have an unlimited supply although they appear to have been discontinued.

Delta has had a program called "Above and Beyond". For the past few years, I would get a packet with these coupons in them early in the year to hand out when someone has gone above and beyond the call of duty. The employee would then send them into Delta and would be entered into drawings for awards. I used to use the coupons as bribes to get free headsets or drinks when I flew coach. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

The simple rule is you don't tip a flight attendant.

If service is exceptionally good, you should tell the purser about the FA, or even sit down a write a letter to the airline mentioning how good the FA's service was.

I (often) do it at the very last moment, when leaving the plane ... and they never refused that small little original siwss chocolate package, sure!

(for sure never money!).

I give a nice Thank You. I will often ask them for their last name, explaining that I want to write a letter.

When I write, I specifically ask that the letter be placed in their personnel file so that it might help them during their evaluations.

An excellent FA on CO recognized me several months after I'd asked for her name and written a letter. Needless to say, the service remained excellent. Truly not my intention, but a nice benefit!

I would say cash is a no-no.

However any small consumable (non-alcoholic) token would probably be OK--especially of the type that can be shared.

Remember, though, never on an international flight.

Why not in international flight? (I fly mostly international...)
