LAX ATC Radar Down
 

LAX ATC Radar went down this morning for about an hour, then went down again a few minutes ago. All airlines delaying and canceling flights, so if you are going out or coming into LAX today, be sure to check with your airline. I'm sure this will effect flights to and from other airports as well, as equipment gets backed up.

I'm in the 1K Service Center at LAX, enjoying the drama playing out before me at the front desk as dozens of 1Ks don't seem to understand what "we have no radar" means. I remain in relative comfort in one of 4 workstations here as other 1Ks eye me and my "space" like hungry hyenas. The Red Carpet Club looks like Bradley International customs and immigrations after 10 jumbos arrived all at once. Getting hungry. Send food. Must...protect..my....space!

UPDATE: Across the country and around the world, hundreds of flights headed into or out of the Southwest were grounded Thursday because of repeated breakdowns in the region's air traffic control radar. By the time the order from the Federal Aviation Administration was lifted more than four hours later, airports around the country were gridlocked with aircraft lined up on the ground, flights canceled and thousands of passengers stranded or delayed. ``I've got a grandma dying in New Mexico and I can't get there,'' said Davis Hill of Boise, Idaho, as he waited for a connecting flight at Los Angeles International Airport.

The problem called into question again the safety of the nation's air traffic control system.

Radars back up (for now)! Still problems galore though. It does seem to be computer related. Station manager here says "that equipment is so old, it looks like the set of 'Voyage To The Bottom of the Sea' in there!"

Failures in a computer system in California grounded hundreds of flights at US West Coast airports Thursday, bringing chaos to airlines and long delays for passengers.

Flights elsewhere in the US were also affected when Federal Aviation Administration officials ordered a short "national ground stoppage."

According to the FAA the problems were caused when an overnight upgrade of computers went wrong and affected radar information.

Well I was on a plane at 6:30 am when this whole thing started. We were actually on 24R engines up ready to go when the pilot came on the PA, telling us we had to get off the runway because of the radar problem. We ended up stuck on the taxiway for an hour and a half.
On my return trip from SJC, I was the first one to board ( already delayed 1 hour) and as I was on top of the stairs, the gate agent called me back "ATC delay, come back!!!" so we were delayed another hour. In the plane the pilot said that the FAA in Washington (???) was giving him one time for the take-off but then OAK center gave him another so they were arguing (???) and had to figure out their differences. I think someone spilled their venti non-fat cappuccino double shot on the radar console but I can't confirm that. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

After two radar failures in less than two weeks grounded flights into and out of California, the Federal Aviation Administration has halted all tests and upgrades of its computer software at regional air traffic control centers around the country.

A radar failure Monday at the FAA's Oakland Center halted flights into the Bay Area's three major airports. A separate malfunction in Southern California last week forced airlines to cancel or delay hundreds of flights.
