Things to do in LA for a day
 

It's such a lovely, dreary, rainy day in SE Connecticut that I am daydreaming about the left coast. As mentioned in a different thread, I am off on my first mileage run on November 4th, which will put me in LA for ~10 hours (noon to 10 pm). Not being a native, or even a regular, I'm looking for a nice way to spend the day. Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

The Getty Museum would be a very nice way to spend your time, and it's (depending on traffic) only about a 15 minute drive from LAX.

A Greyline tour is always an option, too.

We're in the middle of a Transit strike right now, but hopefully it will be over by the 4th.

The museum of tolerance is a must see.

You'll also be close to the LA County Art Museum and the Page museum and the La Brea Tar pits, and the Farmer's market.

I agree with the Museum of Tolerance, but on a Saturday you may need reservations in advance. Same with the Getty Museum.

Griffith Park, LA Zoo and the Gene Autry Museum are all together and would fill the time nicely too. Dinner would round off the time. Maybe down at the Marina. I like the Cheesecake Factory, but I am sure may other suggestions would be equally good or better.

Los Angeles also has an operating winery downtown (just east), the San Antonio Winery (737 Lamar St). A nice historic place for lunch. Follow up with a trip to Olvera Street for some of the Mexican history of the city. The flower mart, a sandwitch at Phillipe's or at the Produce Market. Maybe a walk thru of the train station.

Hollywood is also a trip by itself. Greyline or a car. Drive up Sunset and down Hollywood. Endless places to stop and tour. Chinese theatre, wax museum...

Give me 10 hours in LA, a Zagat's, and an American Express card. LA is a feast!

Lunch at Farmer's Market on Fairfax and a stroll down Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills is always a great way to kill a day in LA...Window shopping is another way to save money...but bring your FF affinity card with you...you might as well earn additional miles on your trip...isn't that the reason you are taking it in the first place?

I spent much of yesterday afternoon on Melrose St. shopping and sitting at a sidewalk cafe watching the beautiful and strange pass by. Nothing quite like it anywhere in the world.

Also, if you can extend your visit a few hours you can be my guest at an NBA game at the LA Staples center which runs from 7:30 til 10:30pm or so.

Getty Museum does not have reservations, EXCEPT for a PARKING SPACE! Not possible to get except far in advance. Just show up and the tram will take you up the hill.
Buildings and garden more interesting then the art as far as I could see.

How about a day at the beach. Venice, Santa Monica, or Manhattan Beach. A short trip from the airport. You might even find a hotel shuttle to get you there.

Shop till you drop in Beverly Hills.

The Getty doesn't require parking reservations on weekends or in the evening. Also not from people arriving by taxi, by bike, or by (when it isn't on strike) public transit.

It seems to me it would be difficult to get in to the parking lot at times a reservation is not needed.

Blazermaniacs are welcome, as long as they don't paint their face red and wear a tin-foil hat with antenna. Those guys got beer spilled on them during last years playoffs and I don't want to sit next to them. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I kinda like

1. Venice boardwalk, muscle beach, etc.

2. Melrose with the weird shops and culture

3. Beverly Hills Rodeo et al, of course

4. Museums? Of course. I love the MOCA Museum of Contemp Art downtown. The automotive museum across from LACMA (County Museum of Art). There is a cool miniatures museum there too and you can eat at Marie Callendars right there which is neat inside and the food is good.

Even with the strike (now ended), it was still possible to get to the Getty Center by transit, as it is also served by Big Blue Bus (the Santa Monica system).
