Good restaurants in Zurich??
I (and several others) am making a mileage run in Nov and Dec to Zurich. Looking for restaurant recommendations. My personal interest would be very good Swiss cuisine at a reasonable price.
I am reading all the normal Frommers and Fodors.com but would like any suggestions from this wonderful group. My current guess is to go to "Our favorite upper-middle restaurant remains the Kaiserreblaube und Goethestuebli. It's just off the square of Sanktpeterkirch. Excellent food, and prices quite fair by Swiss standards." found on www.twenj.com/ I would really apreciate any comments on this restaurant. For good fondue (melted cheese) i'd suggest the "le Dézaley" in Zurichs "Niederdorf" on the right side of the river. In this cozy restaurant you find the cultural inspiration of the french-speaking part of Switzerland. They also offer good wines from that area (especially whites). For a great (but not so cheap) swiss experience to to the Kronenhalle at Bellevue square / Rämistrasse. Still one of the best places in town.

it is not very easy for me to publish my Zurich Restaurant rankings on a public board - as most of the good and not so good Restaurants are also my beverage-clients ...
Mr. Keiser's Reblaube/Goethestübli (the 'Stübli' is upstairs) is a very good Restaurant, but more french than typical swiss cooking. Le Dézaley was the Fondue Restaurant I did invite Indogulf, Dorian and emailman on a Sunday (when many other Fondue choices in town are closed). The Kronenhalle is a (very high priced) Restaurant (partly considered to be an art museum too with originals hanging everywhere like a Gaugin, a Klee, a Hodler, a Dali, etc. etc.). Zurich people and guests go there to see and to be seen to. If you go there, here is my tip: avoid the high-priced meals (which are ok, but miss any 'special' touchg/preparation) aks for a simple Balleronsalat (cold sausage salad in very thin slices on vinegar and italian virgin-oil) or an original St.Galler Bratwurst with Roesti (potatoe cake) and above all ask for the world famous (swiss) chocolate mousse. Avoid (my) high priced wines, go for (my) Pilsener Urquell beer on draught. Many Flyertalkers have been my guests here already: baobab, stimpy, jamiel, PremEx and whom did I forget? |
Normally, I like to wander around and check out various restaurants (and ignore the guidebooks).
Some reasonably priced options: There is a restaurant in the Best Western Hotel Glockenhof (Sihlstrasse 31) that had, in my opinion, particularly good Swiss food for a reasonable price. (Of course, I'm an American, so what do I know about Swiss food?) When by myself, I like the Marche' restaurant in the lower level of the HauptBahnhof (main station). The food isn't really that good, but it is a buffet and you can quickly pick up a meal. It is a chain, but at least it isn't McDonalds. A lot of other places I know by sight and not by name. I also tend to favor Italian restaurants (I love the taste of Swiss food, but since I don't hike mountains, I seem to gain a lot of weight when I eat it). i am also going to zurich (taking advantage of delta's bonus miles) in november, will be staying at the Marriot... since i do not eat cheese, what other swiss specialties should i look for? (besides chocolate http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif)
i love gulash, wienerschnitzel, sauerkraut... (may be it is germany i should be heading?) |
Belle,
look i.e. for "Rösti", the Swiss type of hash browns. Assuming you're not a Vegetarian you should also try a "Bratwurst", a sausage. One of the best places for it is the "Vorderer Sternen" at Bellevue square. You can have it as take-away or eat inside. Another good thing is ice cream, there is a brand called "Mövenpick" which has really good stuff. You find it at Bahnhofstrasse and several other locations. (Btw: it's also served on Swissair flights.) As for the best chocolate in town, I'd suggest "Teuscher" at Bahnhofstrasse (also at the airport) offering unique champagne truffles. |
Belle3388:
I had Zuercher Geschnetzeltes & Berner Roestie** and Rudi's Pilsner Urquell vom Fass at Rudi's Kronenhalle. The Beer was the best. BTW on my way back to the parking garage I passed "Die Altstadt" (Old Town), where I saw a couple of nice (Bistro Style) Restaurants. **Swiss speciality. Something like veal goulash with potato pancake. |
Rudi writes "Potatoe".
I write "Potato". Who is right? Rudi, I or ex Vice Pres. Dan Quale? Who cares. Rudy's P. sound more expensive; Swiss P.! First day at school. Teacher says: " When you grow up you can become President of USA!" Voice from one of the kids: "Even when you don't grow up - you still can become Vice-President!" |
ok - folks. email me your exact dates when you are in 'MY' town and I show you around (if I am not on my rtw-trips). ok?

Restaurant Kronenhalle indeed! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif But bring a large appetite and be prepared for "seconds" and the best chocolate mousse on earth!

Rudi writes "Potatoe".
I write "Potato". Who is right? I give up, I loose, I was looking into over 10 different diccionaries to find some support, but hélas no luck for me: 'mea culpa! ' http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif |
Rudi, i will be there nov 10th till 13th (flexible and depending on weather)and be back to zurich nov 20th....
dont want to impose though, but would appreciate some ’must sees’ pointers... btw, is any of the restaurants in the Marriott good? thanks! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
There are two restaurants at the Marriott (there once were three, but "Scalia", the Italian one, closed years ago). The room is now used for breakfast (one of the best, anywhere) and Sunday Brunch.
The White Elephant is a Thai restaurant. The fixed menu is a better deal than the a la carte menu. This restuarant is very expensive by American standards (for Thai food), but the food is very good. But not as good as Bua Thai in Milpitas, CA. The other restaurant is sort of a bistro, with a variety of food. Some is typical Marriott (Marriott burger) and some local dishes. The food is good, but nothing special. If you go out the back door of the bistro and cross the street, there is a small neighborhood Italian restaurant with very reasonable prices and good food. |
thanks everyone, cant wait to get there! (just for the food... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif)
opus, i just got back from milpitas last night, where is the thai resto u mentioned above? i normally hang around the milpitas square/ mccarthy ranch area...(new cisco) i think white elephant is a chain resto, we went to the one in the basement of the radisson’s in stockholm (or was it copenhagen?) last year.... and it was the BEST thai food 12 of us have ever tasted! (it could also be that this was the first rice-meal that we chinese had in 10 days!) |
Wow, the thread drift police are going to nail me...
Bua Thai is on Main street, between 237 and the Great Mall. It is actually in an old Taco Bell building. The Pad Thai is the best I've ever had (and I've had plenty!). From Cisco, take Great Mall parkway to Main and turn left, it is on the left hand side. |
