He seems to ramble on without making a point. The column certainly lacks any redeeming value. Maybe you're mistaking Salon for CNN. Maybe you don't know what magazine feature writing is. But it's not a "news" piece, and if you look back at his archive of columns, you'll see some fantastic travel writing. National Geographic and other monthly mags certainly think so, too.
