Going to Bangkok... Any suggestions?
First time international traveller, flying to Bangkok soon. (end of Oct/Nov) I was hoping any of those of you who have been there, may have some suggestions of places to visit, things to see and do. Thank you for your suggestions!
|
In the last year, Bangkok has to be the most visited city by Flyertalkers. Just go to the Trip Report forum and do a search for BKK and you'll find tons of info.
|
Thank you for that timely response!

If you haven't ye reserved a room, consider
the new Peninusla. They have a Sunrise Rate of $85/nite including breakfast and one way limo transfer from the hotel. You can book it through Leading Hotels of The World. I will be in BKK Nov 5-10 and at the Peninsula thenights of Nov 8/9. Based on reports from other It appears this hotel is the best hotel bargain on earth right now. Good luck. Ed |
Where do I find the "Trip Report" forum you mention for info re Bangkok? I must have missed it somewheres. Thanks for your help.

Click on the search link at the top of this page. Next enter the search word you want (i.e. Bangkok). Following that use the pulldown menu on the Search Forum / Archive line to find "FlyerTalk Trip Reports". Leave everything else as is, and hit "Perform Search".
I had 18 hits when I just tried this. You can also search "All Open Forums", but this will take a lot of time, and return many useless hits. |
Was in BKK in early '98, enjoyed it very much. I joined a tour group, stayed at nice hotels, though I don't remember which ones, and I had great fun. It was just too hot.

My only one suggestion is to go on a one-day river cruise up the Chao Phraya River to the historic second capital of Thailand in Ayutthaya, about 75 km north of Bangkok. The first Thai capital, Sukhothai, also worth visit, is too far to do on a one-day return trip.
You can book this tour from most hotels' tour desk. It's a full-day tour. One way by cruise on the river and the return via road in a tour bus, or vice versa depending on the number of people booked. I can't remember how much it cost. You have to go to the Oriental Hotel to board the boat on your own. They don't pick you up from wherever you're staying. Please check with the tour desk for details. I know there's plenty of temples and palaces to visit in Bangkok. For me it was just a nice needed break from the noisy and chaotic Bangkok. You will visit a summer palace built by one of the Thai kings and still used by the royal family and also the temples and ruins in Ayutthaya. This trip is also a bit different from the other city tours in that you get to see some of Thailand's idyllic coutryside. |
jimmyjames .. welcome to these boards! I go to BKK each year at least. CHEAP clothing, watches, food and souveniers, and lovely people. And great tourism sights. Few comments from an April trip here: http://www.ozemail.com.au/~ozstamps/cambodia.html Been quite a few threads on Hotels, sightseeing recently on this board. Enjoy the trip! ------------------ ~ Glen ~ |
Hey Jimmy . . .
My 2 cents . . . Please remember that when you travel internationally in third world countries, you are an ambassador of sorts. Most of the people you meet will never come to the West so make sure your actions reflect positively on us all! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif That said, go have a blast! ------------------ Travel is a powerful antidote to contemporary American arrogance. I couldnt agree more with the "be an ambassador" post. By the way, if you are into golf, do not forget your clubs... beautiful courses all over Bangkok. ------------------ Gaucho100K |

On my last trip to BKK, as I was standing near the gate at NRT waiting to board, some guy came up to me and asked, straight from the hip:
"So, what whorehouse are you going to?" I had never seen the guy in my entire life. Sad, sad, sad. Be a good ambassador. |
Yes, alot of idiots go to Thailand for the wrong reasons! The Thai are some of the HAPPIEST and friendliest people on earth. They could give many lessons to Americans in civility.

ROADRUNNER,
You are absolutely right! As one who travels to Thailand practically monthly, I am embarassed by the attitudes of some of the tourists. -RKG |
