Sunset/sunrise world map in real time
I have found a superb website giving you a visual of the world in real time, with day/night exact 3D limits. I find it fascinating. I have confirmed with relatives abroad that the sunrise indications given are correct to the minute. This has done more for me than years of geography lessons in school. You can zoom in/out and point to any particular area of the world.
If you study and "manipulate " the world a bit, you'll see why if you fly to Europe from the West Coast these days, you'll see the sun set and rise up 30 minutes later. It'll give you a new perspective on why the sun sets later up north than south in the summer,it's not necessarily that obvious, particularly why the night/day line tilts SW/NE in the summer and NW/SE in the winter. Took me years to realize what was actually happening ( I mean, beyond the obvious tilt angle of the earth). have fun and let me know what you think. http://www.worldtime.com [This message has been edited by Droneklax (edited 06-02-2000).] |
Great website, Droneklax.
What, though, does UTC mean? It listed the date as 2 June, 2000 UTC. Universal Time somethingorother? |
UTC is the Coordinated Universal Time, an atomic time which is modified periodically (±1 sec) to keep track of the tides braking action....

Great site! Thanks for the link Droneklax.
I have a few friends overseas whom I'll make visit the site (in the hope of not having to wake up 5 am anymore when they phone me) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif ------------------ |
Here is a site I have been using for years. It is not real-time, but does show the current time of your click. You can also input any time of the year and see the day/night view as it would appear at that time. Also can see the Earth from the Sun's view, moon's view..and more. Great realistic look too - notice the glow of the deserts and ice caps..not to mention the city lights. Zoom in features too.
Here it is.. http://www.fourmilab.ch/cgi-bin/uncg.../action?opt=-p Here is the index to change views... http://www.fourmilab.ch/earthview/vplanet.html Hope you enjoy http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Click on the image to zoom in.
