Shanghai?
Brigitte and I will be spending a week in Shanghai in late May/early June. This will be our first time to mainland China (other than HKG). We'll be staying at the J.C. Mandarin hotel in the centre of the city.
Do any of you illustrious travelers familiar with Shanghai have any advice or comments on things to do, see eat and drink (or not)? |
Dear Flyme2 and ambassador of Montreal...
we discussed Shanghai and Beijing earlier this year: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum94/HTML/000775.html The link to the Shanghai tourism site is very comprehensive. I loved the place and if there were FIVE things you MUST do while there... you MUST: *Walk the BUND *Visit the peace park and watch people do Tai Chi early in the morning. *Have a Drink at the old PEACE hotel (I forget the name, it's one of the oldest hotels near the BUND.) *Try the pasteries in the little bake shop. *EAT A PEKING DUCK DINNER!!! Restaurants there are terrific. RATS! I wish I were going back to Shanghai. It's one of my favorite cities. IN return my friend could you e-mail me FIVE things I MUST do in Montreal (hopefully with you and Bridget.) |
Some of the best sight seeing are actually around Shanghai. Suzhou about 80km to the north and Hangchow about 200km to the south. Both are acient cities rich in history and culture.
Shanghai itself has gotten more congested and polluted. The JC. Mandarin is one of three five star hotels. It is run by a singapore chain and located in the center of the city. Have a great time in China and email me if you have further questions. |
Thank you Catman and mntblue. I think we're going to enjoy our little adventure. A friend of ours did a tour of China last year and rated Shanghai as her favourite city, hence our decision.
Catman: Great link! I'll have to reward you at the Catman Do 2. |
