Has anyone stayed at the George V hotel or Prince De Galles hotel? Is it worth the price or Starwood points (for P.D.G.)?
Any other suggestions for a hotel with a good location and view?

I've stayed at both. The George V is just reopened as the Four Season George V and is not part of Starwood. The Prince de Galles is OK and was completely redone when Sheraton took it over from Marriot about 4 or 5 years ago.

Stayed at Prince de Galles when it was a Marriott, and it was a great hotel in a great location, on the Avenue George V, just off of the Champs Elysee.

I too stayed here when still a Marriott and echo DJlawmans sentiments.

BTW- Marriott also spent a fortune remodelling and upgrading this fine old hotel prior to the sale to Sheraton.

I'll be using a Free Fridays at the Prince de Galles in March (Thank you Starwood Angel). I am a Diamond, and I wonder if I can expect any kind of upgrade given the Free Friday's generally gives you a 'standard' room. I know that in the US they will upgrade you, but what about overseas, especially Paris--where this is supposedly a very upscale property?
PS- I will be staying 2 nights, paying an outrageous (to me) 2200 french francs for the second night!

We stayed at the George V about 6 years ago. It's probably been refurbished since then, but we enjoyed it greatly. The location can't be beat as it's just a little over a block to the Metro station.
To be honest, you could probably find the same quality or better hotel for less money elsewhere in Paris. I enjoyed staying there, but the cost was exorbitant for what we got.
Travel & Leisure magazine usually does a listing of great hotel finds in Paris and other world capitals every year. You could check it out online. Or try Conde Nast Traveler for suggestions.

mauld, please let me know what you think when you stay at the Prince De Galles? I have booked one night with the Starwood points but it took me 4 tries before I got it. They kept telling me that they had rooms but I couldn't use my points until finally one person called the hotel directly to get an o.k. Hope you have a good time there!

I'm also interested in a hotel in Paris, but need something a whole lot cheaper than that. Is there anything livable (read: no worse than a lower-end Best Western) lower than €90 (500FF or so) a night?

Probably yes, due to the weak Euro and very strong US dollar. I stayed (about 2 yrs ago) at BW la Fleche-d'Or, on Amsterdam for about $US125./night, with cont breakfast included. It's a decent location a was fine having recently been remodeled. Note however, that the rooms are a bit small.

If you want to "blend in with the locals",but not be too far from the touristy sites, try Holiday Inn Garden Court/Tour Eiffel.
We keep coming back every year. During the high season, the rate is about 750 FF, including a very hearty breakfast and ALL taxes, wich is no small potatoes in Paris. The hotel is in a very livable 15-th district, is one block from the Metro, and about 10 min walk from the Eiffel tower. Monoprix ( a large grocery store ) is right there, with it's great bakery and fresh produce. Plus, twice a week, right under the hotel windows, there is a great market set up by the local farmers. It is fun just to walk around and to watch people. The hotel is clean, quiet and safe. The rooms, although nice and comfortable, are small by the american standards, but an average size for a european hotel. Another great thing about this hotel is that you can book it on the Internet through the holiday-inn site ( and get points or miles). The site lists all of the available rates, specials,plus the cancellation policies which are very liberal.

I stayed at the Courtyard Paris de Neuilly for about the price range you are looking at. It's a new hotel with nice staff. Somewhat off the beaten path but free shuttle on call to Port Maillot and less than a ten minute walk to the nearest metro step. I'd probably stay there again if I wanted to be economical.
