Nothing theoretical about it.

FAA minimums for boarding, deplaning and flight examples:

757 = 4
727 = 3
767 = 4
MD80 = 3

Thanks Cobber - can ask a follow-up. Do the numbers you quote change accoring to the number of passengers or are they absolutely fixed because of the aircraft type. I suppose what I am driving at is, if I find myself on an MD80 flight where I am the only passenger, will I still have 3 FAs?

The answer is yes. The FAA sets minimums according to the number of seats, not the number of passengers.
