Security template size at UA in SFO?
 

Does anyone know the size of the template at the United terminal? Or is there a good way to find out before I get there? Thanks.

Call United and ask? If you trust their response. Maybe have them fax you the rules!

I don't know the exact size of the opening, but I can tell you that United's carry on limits are 45 linear inches (9x14x22). My carry on is 9 1/2 inches deep and 14 inches wide and it fits inside the templates at SFO with just a fraction of an inch on each side to spare.

Thanks, letiole. I took Doc's advice and called United--I don't know why I didn't think of that first, but it seems I always turn to these boards first. Probably because of the great information.--Anyway, when I got the agent on the phone at UA, she told me 46 linear inches. I asked her to break that down. No matter what I said, she kept saying 46 linear inches. Finally, after asking to speak with her supervisor, she came up with 23x14x9, which is all I simply wanted to know. My bag comes in just barely under that size.

The 45 linear inches letoile quoted (9x14x22)is the standard now being proposed as a way to go for all carriers if Congress passes the unified standard being proposed. Better safe than sorry! Have a safe, fun and productive trip!

What is depressing is that a person employed to provide information to customers was too stupid to realize that telling you (repeatedly) "46 linear inches" was not helpful towards your goal of determining whether your bag would fit through a template. An item measuring 20"x17"x9", for example, will NOT fit, although it is clearly "46 linear inches".

What does one do when one has a carrier that is 9 x 14 x 22 when packed for usual travel but becomes 10 or even 10.5 x 14 x 22 when stuffed a bit? Argue (hopeless), plead (also hopeless), check it (not a good solution). No, one goes to Terminal 2 or 3 (at ORD), goes through security there, and goes to UA gate via connecting passenger route. Voila!

Perhaps that will work at others. If so, let's not tell UA!

There is always a way around bureaucratic roadblocks and American ingenuity will always find it. It drives 'em nuts- 'crats, that is.

I am too lazy to do it on my own - can somebody give me this measurments in centimeters please? (this info is not for me, I did test my handluggage many times - but often europeans ask me and I never calculated it).

As I recall, 2.54cm= 1 inch so just multiply by 2.54 to convert each number from Eng to metric!

Rounded up to the nearest centimeter: 23 x 36 x 56 cm.

22.86cm x 35.56cm x 55.88cm
