FREE high-speed internet access
From the Frequent Flier Crier 9/2/99
Free... high-speed Internet access... in every room. That's the way it should be.
At Wingate Inn hotels, every guest now has access to high-speed Internet access connections, in their guest rooms, meeting rooms or boardroom.
Each Wingate Inn hotel is equipped with LodgeNet Entertainment Corporation's On Line by LodgeNet system, which is supported by
national 24-hour customer service. To go online, a guest plugs his or her computer into the room's Ethernet-based Internet jack
and launches the laptop's resident browser application. Access is instantaneous, at speeds up to 50 times faster than traditional
phone modems, with no software installation or re-configurationn required.
Wingate opened its first hotel in July 1996, and now has a 70-property network of upper mid-market hotels.
I have to admit I wasn't familiar with Wingate before receiving their news release regarding their Internet access initiative.
They've got my attention now!

Shadow: That sure gets my attention, too. I've seen Wingates but never stayed in one.
A couple of points of interest:
(1) I could not locate any information about high speed Internet access on their web site. Strange - I think they'd have a banner blazing on their home page.
(2) They are owned by Cendant, a communications company. Interesting synergy - and very late '90's - a hotel chain that's a subsidiary of a comms company.

I'm not sure if I would call Cendant a communications company. Cendant is more of a travel services company.
Their businesses include:
1) The old HFS
- Ramada
- Days Inn
- Super 8
- Howard Johnson
- and more
2) Avis
3) Real Estate
- Century 21 (remember when TWA owned this company?)
- ERA
- Coldwell Banker
4) Membership clubs (often sold by direct marketing to lists purchased from CC companies)
- Traveller's Advantage
- NetMarket
- Autovantage
- And more...

And remember that it takes a different kind of connection than the phone jack connection card. And while it may be available, there is usually an additional charge. Sheraton Wall Centre in Vancouver has the internet connection, but alas, I did not have the right connector and the cost was way too expensive in comparison to just dialing in on the phone modem.
