Non-cancelable Millineum Fares
 

Here's a sample fare rule while booking online on Alaska's Web Site. This is for all Alaska fares, including their normal full fare tickets and it's not uncommon to see this fare rules on tickets purchased for the millenium. What's everyone's take on these rules?

SPECIAL RESTRICTIONS APPLY TO TICKETS CONTAINING TRAVEL BETWEEN DECEMBER 26, 1999 AND DECEMBER 31, 1999, EXCLUDING INTRA-STATE OF ALASKA. THESE SPECIAL RESTRICTIONS ARE:

All tickets are non-refundable.

All tickets are non-changeable.

Tickets cannot be credited towards other travel if unused or canceled.
Ticketing time limits apply for all fares, including unrestricted Coach and First Class.

American had the same policy for a good part of its system during the period December 16 - January 6. All tickets to the Carribean, Florida, New Orleans, and a few other locations were made non-refundable, non-cancellable and non-transferrable to another flight if the original flight was not taken.

In addition, American did not put some flights into the reservation system --they could only be booked with the airline directly. Customers were put on a waiting list, contacted by American with a price and given two weeks to decide if they would fly or not. The price was fixed at the time of the initial call and would not go up during the 2 week period. Once you said yes, you had to give your credit card and purchase the tickets on the spot. You could then have the tickets done e-ticket, printed at a local agency or sent to you.

American claims they did this in order to block tour operators from snatching up all the tickets and re-selling them at a higher price.

My tickets from NY to PR were $672 each. Not bad but higher than Tower Air ($345) and TWA ($500).
