air passengers pay $32.50 entry fee to Mexico (NY Times)

Mexico Sets Entry Fee For Most Tourists tarting July 1, Mexico will begin charging foreign tourists 150 pesos, about $15.50 at recent exchange rates, to enter the country.

Tourists arriving by air or on land will be subject to the entry fee. But tourists who declare that they intend to stay within 15.5 miles of the border and passengers from cruise ships who stay in Mexico less than 72 hours will not be charged.

Travel agents say that the fee is unlikely to discourage tourists planning lengthy trips to Mexican beach resorts or to colonial cities, who expect to spend hundreds of dollars on their vacations in any event. But people traveling to Mexico on modest budgets, including thousands of Mexican-American families who travel by car or bus from border states to cities in northern Mexico to visit relatives, could feel the squeeze.

Mario Sánchez, a spokesman for the Tourism Ministry, said that the ministry was aware of the risks and was studying how to keep them to a minimum. "We do not want to discourage tourism or damage the tourism industry," Mr. Sánchez said.

He estimated that the measure would generate about $80 million a year.

Air passengers arriving in the United States must pay a $32.50 entry fee. Mexican applicants for a United States visa now pay a $45 fee.

Another bogus way to raise money, but not surprising!

We charge them, they charge us... What ever happened to open borders, open trade, down with restrictions, tarrifs, etc. Looks like the people taxes survive and thrive! NAFTA should have addressed this!

We had to pay to LEAVE NZ or Australia (only one of them). The "charges" seem to be quite common and tend to have, at best, a negative impact on the tourists.
