Suggestions on hotels in Bangkok
I will be staying two nights in Bangkok for R & R on the way back from my business trip to Asia. Last time I stayed at Sukhothai Hotel. It is a beautiful hotel and the suite they gave me was very nice. But the location was not convenient for tourists like myself (maybe good for business people who deals with embassies or banks). Although the service was very good, I did not feel relaxed there. So, do any of you have any suggestions? I am looking for a higher end hotel with a relaxed atomosphere with convenience of walking around shopping.
Thanks |
I love the Sheraton Royal Orchid on the river. The staff is lovely, all rooms have a river view & are very nice. It is connected to a shopping plaza plus is easy walking distance to other places & has a convenient boat dock. Plus miles....

I have found the Hyatt Erawan able to fill most of my relaxation needs. Might be the Hotel for you.

Marriott Sukhumvit is a in a good spot for shopping, and close to an elevated trail station.

I stayed at the Shangra-la which was in a great location. This was a few years ago and they offered a package that included a great buffet breakfast and total laundry service. I was able to have all of my clothing laundered and dry cleaned. When we checked in after a week on the road I sent all of my clothing that I had worn to the hotel service. Everything came back packaged beautifully and there was no charge regardless of the amount.

I stayed at the SHERATON GRANDE SUKHUMVIT.
The service was excellent. We Upgraded to the club level which incl daily buffet BKFST and limo transfers to the airport. the club level room was quite large. I would definitely reccommend it!! |
I think the Shangri-la still has that package yellowpellican cited or perhaps just similar. The rack rate plan includes breakfast, unlimited laundry and two-way airport transfers. At BKK, available from 190USD, I think. Be sure to ask for a room on the river side. It's quite depressing on the other side. The Krung Thep wing is supposed to be nicer (I've never been in that side) and pricier and closer to Skytrain terminal station, Saphan Taksin. Join the Golden Circle, too, their FSP. It comes with breakfast even for a plain member when you stay at a rate without breakfast.
As far as I know, the Sheraton Grande does not have a club floor. But their delux room comes with all the benefits (breakfast, butler services, free local calls, evening cocktail). A delux room is the same as a superior room. Maybe, kurshin was given an executive suite? They quite often upgrade SPG Platinum to these suites. |
I stayed at the Grand President as recommended and we were really happy. It's a executive rental apartment set. price was good. See my Bkk thread from last Nov if interested.
BUT.... Nothing compares to the Peninsula Hotel. We paid $120US by checking thier web site before phoning. One of the nicest hotel stays in my life! |
There are many excellent hotels in Bangkok. I usually stay at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit. I have also enjoyed staying at the Evergreen Laurel and the Sheraton Royal Orchid.

I've stayed at some of the above recently. Some comments:
- JW Marriott is a good Marriott, but the rooms still lack that luxurious feeling (enhanced standard Marriott carpet, etc.). Better breakfast buffet than the Royal Orchid - Royal Orchid: renovation work on the Tower floors is not over yet - Shangri-la: I haven't stayed at the Oriental or Sukhotai, but the Krungthep wing is far more luxurious than any of the American chain hotels; right next to the Skytrain. Paying rack rate at any Shangri-la's yields a number of benefits, including laundry, airport transfers, etc. - Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit: less of a resort feel than the Royal Orchid, but a newer and slightly more upscale property IMO. Truly excellent Sunday brunch. - Hyatt: a good property, better located for business and shopping than tourist activities. |
Whhile I realize the specific requesst was for "higher-end" hotels, I can share about some more maderatelt priced ones. Our favorite has been the Royal River, a hotel that has no external ambiance that is up the river from the central area of Bangkok. To get to the central area, you should take a water taxi/bus. A most interesting (and cheap) ride. Near main streets is the Holiday Inn, which is a great tourist walkaround area, with easy walks to the river, and a great buffeet breakfast. Our last trip (2001), we stayed at a more local (clean but eclectic) we booked through the Best Western site. The Baiyoke Suites are in a real neighborhood, with lots of local shops (Not much tourist). On an evening walk, we even encountered an elephont walking through the street outside the hotel. A more local place.
