How does Preclearance work with onboard food?

I've only been through preclearance airports a few times and never really gave it much thought. However, having just come home from a non-preclearance location, it got me thinking.
I believe we can't bring disallowed food from the plane into the US (fruits, etc.) as those will cause a problem at customs.
However, with preclearance, there's no further customs inspection when arriving in the US. How is this handled?
I'm sure there's a simple answer to this that I just can't think of at the moment...

USCBP and the US Department of Agriculture have this Manual: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/plant-imp...ance-locations

I have a relative that had a leftover sandwich that she was going to eat at the airport (last year) and received quite the admonishment before she had to toss it. Needless to say, it was not a vegan sandwich.

I had a friend who was admonished because she had a banana in her carryon. Also, she was told that this infraction could have resulted n confiscation of her Global Entry.

Thank you - that's exactly what I was looking for!
So, is it safe to say that when you arrive in the US on a Preclearance flight, you can walk off with a banana that is served inflight and no one will know/notice/care?

All food waste generated on board flights with precleared passengers, except flights arriving from Canada, is regulated upon arrival in the United States. See the Regulated Garbage page for details.

I'd expect that no one will know/notice/care 99.5% of the time - but the flight still must arrive at an airport with CBP facilities. I would not be surprised if randomly one of these flights has dogs waiting for you on the jetway, probably not looking for banana peels.

Yes. Once you're past US pre-clearance, you've technically entered the US as far as USCPB is concerned, and anything you acquire past that is fine. There will be no further screening once you arrive at your US destination. Just walk on out of the airport.

I hope some day that pre-clearance will come to airports in Mexico.

But, if they did, they wouldn't have room for the large post-security duty-free shop!

😆 The one at YYZ is ridiculous. "You must exit through the gift shop!"

All of Mexico and Central America, too. Even the new main terminal at LGA!

At LAX I've seen it a couple of times that CBP officers were waiting next to the gate where arriving passengers entered into the sterile departure area and pulled over certain travellers.
I've seen it in San Diego once where they had an arriving flight from Canada going through the FIS (but with closed immigration counters) just so that they could put all checked and carry-ons through agriculture's X-Ray. On other occasions officers just observed the crowd as they entered the sterile departure area and did some random spot checks.

You've entered the United States, but you are still subject to ag and customs enforcement. Note that any airport which accepts preclearance passengers must have CBP facilities.

That's true. But at LGA, the CBP presence exists (at Terminal A) primarily for the purpose of clearing general aviation/charter flights, as LGA does not receive scheduled commercial flights from international airports which lack a pre-clearance facility. Of course, none of this precludes CBP officers from meeting a pre-cleared commercial flight at one of the other terminals, but that would be very unusual. Would be interesting to learn if that's ever happened at LGA.

I suppose so, but of the 200+ pre-clearance landings I've done at US airports I've never seen any evidence of such enforcement, nor being treated differently on arrival than on a US-to-US trip. But none of my pre-cleared arrivals were in California with potential ag inspections.

You also don't know what may happen with your luggage before you see it on the baggage carousel. All I can say is that it only takes that less-than-1% chance for someone to have an issue.
