I guess this is travel related. Interesting to note how runways are laid out. More interesting, I find, is that in certain parts of the world, runways are aligned more or less one way, while in others they have multiple alignments. Part of this is of course age, but also, it represents those areas that tend to have more fluctuating winds, and thus more weather problems.

if you zoom in, you can (faintly) see topographical features ... in addition to the fact that runway orientations generally align with prevailing winds, it's important to consider the safety factors associated with approach and departure tracks that basically lie along (rather than across) valleys and ridges

Some of the things I find fascinating is how many airports only have runways in one direction. You can kind of tell the old airports from the modern ones. Also, look at how many airports there are - tons in the US, especially Florida and a little around the east coast. I expected a lot more in South America where planes are a way of getting around. I didn't expect so many in South Korea and India.
