* Asterisk if it's just a touchdown and takeoff

Can you honestly say you've visited a place in you've only seen the inside of the terminal ???

Taiwan IS the Republic of China. But you're right. It's very complicated and the US news media doesn't understand it themselves, much less can explain it. The People's Republic of China has been fairly successful strong arming the media to reporting things its way as far as the word "China".

Sounds like Carl's friend might be for Taiwan independence which, if this is the case, actually means that Taiwan is NOT part of China in her view, i.e. she has a view that Taiwan is its own political entity distinct from that which is called "China" and does not claim any of the mainland.

But under the "One China" viewpoint, you're correct, Taiwan is part of the ROC and administered by the ROC, and nearly all of the land that is administered by the PRC is also claimed by the ROC. And of course all ROC territories are claimed by the PRC too.

The Travelers Century Club, which rather self-importantly sets itself up as the arbiter in visiting every country and territory in the world, has a list of 327 states/territories. Originally it specified that in order to count a country as 'visited' you needed to pass beyond customs control and actually set foot in the country. However, in recent years the TCC changed its ruling and now allows people to claim they have visited a country if they are in transit or have somehow set foot inside the airport. Being on a plane on a runway does not not count.

Nah. China makes it easy. Taiwan is even considered a "third-country" under its TWOV rules. Plus, the passport thing. Oh, and chatting about Rebiya Kadeer anywhere in Taiwan, no big deal.

But then again, sometimes Taiwan tries hard to be the PRC (see the recent China Airlines cigarette smuggling scandal)...
