When I was 7 and my brother was 8, we went to Salamanca, in upstate New York, by the Erie Railroad's Erie Limited on the Fresh Air Fund's summer-away-from-the-city program. In Jersey City we were handed over to the train's conductor, and we were picked up at the Salamanca station by a farm family, but could you image 2 kids being allowed to do this today (this happened in 1950)? The summer in the country, on a farm, by the way, was wonderful.

At 7 to Glion, near Montreux, with school.
Without any parental guidance (ie not mine or not my friends' parents also), Corfu aged 17 in search of the three Ss. Sadly, I think I only managed two of them.

Under the circumstances with such brothers, would you say your home was closer to being like HVN or HEL on earth?
Does summer camp away from family count? Does going/staying away with non-parent relatives count?
The first ticketed trip I took without any accompanying adult or other older relative for a journey with a ticketed travel time of 3+ hours? It was from NY-Penn Station to Washington, DC-Union Station. My first unaccompanied flight involved DCA. My first long-haul trip abroad as a minor without any relatives was from somewhere in the US to Paris, FR.

Mexico as a teenager. $3 tip would get you into Hussong's Cantina. UGH! I still don't drink Tequila due to those days.

I was 11 when I did a road trip with my great aunt from her home in NJ to see her neighbors in Southwest Harbor, ME. She was 55 and drove a Camaro at the time (1978). A year later, she took me on a two week trip to Greece and Turkey (40 years ago this week). She was the one that gave me my travel "wings".

Not counting school trips as holidays, I'd have to say domestic plane trips to visit friends (as a houseguest in the parents' home) around Christmas of my freshman year at college. We went into NYC (using public transportation, mostly suburban buses from NJ but also the subway system) for NYE, the first and only time I saw the ball drop in person.
ADDED: The parents had a Playboy Club key and invited us to use it for drinks and dinner (alcohol was legal at 18 in NY then) there, among the bunnies, that evening. When I look back, I'm amazed that we were able to reserve a table for NYE; maybe the parents were more VIP than I had realized.
