Why we get on a plane...
I am not an AV geek, I really, really do not like bumpy flights. Still, I do fly a bit, and I will fly, just to fly somewhere, never thought I would when not for work. Whenever I land somewhere, I just want to move on, get on another flight and next stop, regardless if on holiday or for work. Is it me just being one sick puppy? Amateur psychologists are welcome! Curious, and the BA forum is probably the best one... 😋

The brief escape from reality and the wonder of being transported above the earths surface and a sense of adventure |
For us, being somewhere else.
Doesn’t matter if we’ve been before (which we have done quite often), but travelling is infinitely better than being just sat at home! In fact, only 2 minutes ago, we were just discussing a 2-week bounce around the USA in 2020, with Charleston and San Antonio as possible targets (ex-DUB, of course, to augment the TPs). The travelling, as well as the destination, is what makes it a pleasurable hobby for Elders. Moving on? Apart from connections, we do like to be somewhere long enough to try to absorb where we are, however briefly. One week minimum would be our norm, I guess, although longer is often better. The flying bit is just a means to an end, in comfort with a flat bed please! |
the disconnection from earth.
each flight where we rotate and up and out of there--that moment--its my happy place. work or personal, i enjoy the feeling of aviation and everything that comes with it. my partner is a marine biologist so quite the opposite--his home is the sea. yet ive turned him into one that enjoys the amazing experience that man has done for lift and planes. |
Interesting ... I’ve long lost the ‘magic’ of flying. Convenient-ish and quick-ish, but the magic has long faded into the humdrum of travel. I guess motor cars were exciting once? ;)

I think the answers lie in what flying represents for you. You have the answers in you, not any of us on here. One thing to consider is your emotional state when you fly, and then trying to think about why you feel that way. This may take space and time to allow meaning to develop, so may not be a quick fix from a forum, although any reflection is good!

This thread was originally posted in the BA forum but has been moved away from it due to lack of specific relevance to BA.

I understand where you are coming from and I too am the same way. Last year for instance I flew QR just because they had a $2K return flight available in their business class including flying a 772ER, A350 and I was able to spend time at their renowned business lounge in Doha. That's the only thing I wanted to do was do the flight then go home but to do this trip but as a caveat I had to actually go somewhere and that meant 5 nights in Singapore.
