Connection time advice - internal to international in US
Hi - just some advice please. Have a flight from Tampa to Boston, to make a Boston to London flight with just a 1hr 7min connection. If I was inbound into US I would not consider it, but as outbound from US wondering wether people think it's enough time? Due to timings, if dont book this flight it means i am away for akother 24hrs.... not ideal. Advise or help appriciated. Thanks Richard

It's impossible to answer your question otherwise. If booked on the same airline (into the same terminal) on one ticket, it's eminently doable. |
Agreed, we need more information to tell you. If you are on separate tickets there is a very good chance you'll miss your international flight, leaving you out-of-pocket to buy a new return.

More info
Sorry newbie here....
flight in idea JetBlue flight, gets into Boston at 20.13 to termibal C. Flight out is on Norweigian to London Gatwick leaving Boston at 21.20 at terminal E. Many thanks for your help. Richard |
Since it's Norwegian I'll assume this is two tickets which gives you not protection. I wouldn't risk it.
|
I agree. This looks quite bad. I wouldn't risk it. An overnight in an airport area hotel would be a lot less expensive than a complete re-book of your international flight.
|
For the OP ... what the two posts above are referring to is that if you have one ticket on jet blue and another ticket on norwegian and for any reason the jet blue flight is late and you miss the norwegian flight you are screwed because norwegian will see you simply as a no show and cancel your ticket. You will not have any recourse other than to buy a new ticket for the next flight.
If that is not the case and both flights are on the same ticket I personally would not want an hour between terminals. Remember, though it says you have an hour, flights close the boarding 15 minutes before departure and the arrival time is at the gate, not the time you will be getting off the plane. Further, IIRC if you have bags checked you will need to collect and re-check them which exiting security. |
Indeed. In this scenario you are up the creek with no paddle. Change your flights. |
BOS Terminals C and E are connected air-side, so you'll be able to walk from your arrival gate to the departure gate without having to pass through a security checkpoint. A 1h07m connection time is still very risky, though. If your domestic flight is even 30 minutes late to arrive you may miss the cutoff time for your international departure. (You need to allow at least 5 minutes from "arrival" to when the door opens at the gate, plus time to exit the plane, plus time to walk from gate to gate, plus the 10-15 minute cutoff before departure.) As others have noted, because you are traveling on two separate tickets neither airline will take responsibility if you miss the connecting flight. You'll be on your own to buy a new ticket and pay for other costs such as hotel and meals. Bottom line, if it were my trip I would not accept this itinerary. Too risky.

Very risky if you are already checked in on Norwegian, and document checks are complete before travel, and you are not checking a bag. Impossible if any of those requirements are missed.
As you are on separate tickets, if you miss the connection, there's no obligation on Jet Blue or Norwegian to put you on a later flight and they almost certainly won't. Your Norwegian ticket will be cancelled and there will be no refund. Likewise, the return portion will also be cancelled, so you will be looking at buying a new ticket, which will be very expensive on a walk up basis. The chances of a very expensive loss on this bet are high - but only you can make the assessment as to whether it's worth it. Most people on FT would allow at least three hours for such a connection without bags. Some would insist on an overnight (although if the disruption in BOS is so severe as to hose all flights, the Norwegian flight will likely also be delayed). |

One time I booked LAX-SFO-MUC-OTP. SFO was a two hour wait so I thought it was plenty of connection time. Turns out we were late leaving LAX. Rain forced us to circle SFO for 45 min. We had to run to our gate to catch MUC. our baggage didn’t arrive at OTP until 2 days later. Certain things you can control, certain things you can’t. Personally, change your flight if possible. Why risk it? |
