Boeing 797 Launch is Near

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cnb...new-plane.html

The deadline for engine manufacturers to submit a proposal for 797 powerplants was today. GE is expected to be the front-runner and may be given exclusive rights. This new aircraft comes on the heals of current difficulties at Airbus from management being under investigation and the horrendous sales and cancelations of the A330neo. Airbus will not be able to offer a clean-sheet aircraft to counter the new Boeing aircraft. It is expected that Airbus will try and stretch the A321neo but no new wing which will severely impact performance.

I thought I read somewhere the proposed engines would have a diameter as large (or larger) than a 737 fuselage. Wouldn't that scrape on the tarmac?

Well, the 777 engines are already that large. But no the 797 is a 757/767 replacement. The engines won't need to be that large. So no scraping of the tarmac required.

888? To please Chinese customers? They could use 707, 717 and 727.

2025 is still a ways off. With the world in turmoil (trade wars, China building commercial aircraft etc), who knows if there will be a big demand for this. Then again the Airbus 321ceo that AA inherited from US will be due to be replaced about that time.

Since OMNI is for topics other than miles, points and travel, we'll move this to another forum.

I think that re-using aircraft model numbers would lead to much confusion with all 3 still operating, including 100+ 717's with Delta and Hawaiian. Even if they're retired by the time the next generation comes around.

I flew on a 717 from GRR to DTW a few weeks ago.

The original source of the engine RFP deadline news is here. And that will be a must-read site for aviation news in the future.

Letters in the name, perhaps? (e.g. 7A7) Though that might not be something Boeing will need to worry about for a while.

That's an interesting thought. The 787 was initially called the 7E7.

Very interesting, I assume it will operate at a high cabin pressure like the 787

This is how they compare
797
5,000 nmi (9,300 km) range with 225 seats and a range of 4,500 nmi (8,300 km) with 275 seats

Compared to a 787-8
242 passengers and a range of 7,355 nautical miles

Very interesting about the new Rolls Royce engine they are offering. Looks like a return to the narrow-bodied end of the market after selling the JV to P&W.
