And you have cases where flyers skipped customs, because the wrong route was open(or plane got routed to wrong terminal which was domestic only)
Example: https://abcnews.go.com/US/passengers...ry?id=35373089 If it does happen to you, raise a fuss... Otherwise, if you leave airport, you'll need to return and be processed via customs |

USA, DTW and O'Hare.
I've flown out of ORD a lot and never had an international arrival at T1 or T3, unless it was precleared in Canada or Ireland. I've also never had a domestic departure out of T5. (Is there any such flight? An eighth freedom flight?) The ORD procedure that I'm most familiar with is that the international flight dumps you out at T5. The plane may then depart from another terminal but it gets towed over there empty. |

In HKG, all arrivals go onto the lower level via the jetway’s down slope and departures come from the upper level via the upslope.
At US Airports, the jetways have an alternate exit that goes directly to immigration. |

HKG is easy since every flight there is international.

Just out of curiosity: which gates/terminals at ORD?

Back before DTW's new terminals opened in the early to mid 2000's, they used to have all international arrivals not pre-cleared go to the International Arrivals Terminal which had 4 or 5 gates. They would off load all passengers, luggage and cargo there. Everything would be processed by Customs and Immigration, then the passengers would be bussed to the main terminal where they cleared security again for the domestic or international connections or just walk out if that was their final destination.
Now the new terminals have you deplane and exit at the bottom level of the terminal to the customs area. The doors from the departure level are closed to prevent access to the main terminal. This is the same at most international airports as well with some custom areas being on the top level of the terminal like MIA's terminals H/J arrivals. |
At Terminal 4 at JFK each gate seems to be dual use. There is a large door which when it is in one position it forces passengers to walk up a ramp which then exits into the general area of the terminal - but when the door is in the other position, it blocks the ramp and forces the passengers into a ground level hallway which goes straight to immigration.
BTW, this discussion bears out what was talked about starting in post 19 of this thread https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/delt...carrier-2.html - Americans for whatever reason tend to use the term "customs" when they mean immigration or immigration and customs collectively. |
