Checked Baggage with Overnight Layovers?

Not sure where to post this, mods feel free to move...

I have a general question regarding what happens with checked baggage during overnight layovers.

I vaguely recall reading somewhere that the USA does not allow checking through bags if they require an overnight layover, is this correct?

What about rest of the world? Will airlines generally tag my bags to final destination regardless of length of layover?

Thanks

Is there a reason this is in the AC forum?

Re the US, UA through-checked AND kept overnight my suitcase a few weeks ago in DEN, so I don't think that's correct.

As this does seem more a generic travel query and less of s specific Air Canada matter it's been relocated to the TravelBuzz forum for further discussion.

The rules are probably different from country to country but one example was I had booked a ticket VCE-FRA-IAH and had intentionally booked an overnight layover in FRA so I could enjoy my last full day in VCE. I think my layover was like 12 hours. It was no problem. I just checked in at VCE and my bag was checked all the to IAH with no questions. I don't even think they asked if I wanted to short check it.

It was great since I was coming back from a 3-week vacation and didn't need my giant bag of mostly dirty clothes. I was able to pack what I needed for my overnight at the FRA airport Sheraton.

Some airlines, such at QR, won't give you an option and require checking through to final destination if your layover is less than 24 hours.

Most airlines do not want the responsibility for your bags which is why many refuse to hold overnight.

Some check it through. Some don't. Some give you an option. Depends very much on the airline and the connection point.

I've successfully gotten them to short-check a bag on an overnight connection at IAH. (United)

The long segment was still ahead of me, so it was reasonably obvious that it wasn't a hidden-city trick or something like that.

I had an overnight stay at DXB this past weekend. It was unclear whether EK would short-check, so I decided not to risk it and went with carry-on only. I saw a post on their board this week where someone asked for a short-check on an 18-hour layover and was denied.

In the last year I've done it at MNL (ICN-MNL-SYD - stayed in hotel near airport) and KLIA2 (ICN-KUL-PER on AirAsia, stayed at SamaSama inside terminal)

Just remember to pack a change of underwear, socks and shirt in your hand luggage.
Toiletries, you can get in your room.

In each case the layover was less than 24hrs and I didn't expect to be able to check through until they asked me at check-in desk.
