Im currently staying at a category 7 resort with my mother. A few hours ago another guest (i presume) tried to repeatedly break down the door to our bungalow, cutting himself up in the process and leaving blood on our porch. My mom is understandably very shaken. Security was contacted, took a while to get here, and apparently escorted the guest to his room. Calling on experienced travelers for input, what would you do in this situation?

Move rooms if you feel not secure & speak to manager to see what caused the situation.

Change rooms. Category 7 really tells us nothing. What country, city, chain, etc?

I'd guess alcohol was involved. If staff didn't respond in a timely manner, I'd certainly call SPG corporate and complain right away, as well as ask for a manager.

Escalate the issue. Get an absolute guarantee of safety for the remainder of your stay. This kind of thing would completely ruin a holiday for me.

I'd also want to make sure the guest isn't still staying there.

What does this mean, for practical purposes?

Probably just someone who was drunk, couldn't handle his alcohol, and mixed up rooms. I suspect he was ejected from the hotel/resort.

Ask to be moved to upgraded room, resort fee waived and $500 resort credit.

In Costa Rica at a rather expensive resort? Doubtful. Unless the person hurt a guest or employee, I don't think anything will happen to them.

Definitely ask to move to another room, preferably in another area of the resort. Chances are that the person doesn't remember what room they tried to get into, but if they do, they might not be happy about having to deal with security. So, change rooms in case he decides to come back to "talk about it".

Given that the culprit managed to hurt himself and start bleeding in the process, having to deal with security is what he has to expect. Moreover (and provided that it was just a drunk), if you are so wasted that a) you can't get back to your own room and b) cause property damages and inflict injuries to yourself, seeking professional help is the way to go.

And make sure they throw in a new Ferrari for you to take home while they are at it.

Thanks for your replies, they were especially helpful since i couldnt even think straight for a while. Wound up requesting and getting an upgrade, plus reimbursement for one night, which i think is fair.

Sounds like you're happy and the hotel acted appropriately.

This doesn't sound like an attempted break-in. Rather, it sounds like a lost drunk trying to get into "his" room.
