So a couple of days on and things are almost back to normal in terms of itchy skin. It must be something related to the hotel, although I do have a flight and train journey involved in my weekly travels but the likelihood of those causing an issue is fairly low.

I'm hoping it's not a medical issue as I've read that kidney failure can create these symptoms too - but that wouldn't explain why it clears up a couple of days after I return from my work travel.

So I have three things to eliminate: the toiletries (these did have a strong 'chemical' smell to them which I noticed in the first week, and I accidentally used the shower gel last week after the gym session), the towels and the bedsheets.

I notice when I get the allergic reaction my skin, particularly on my leugs, is very hot to the touch, which makes the itching worse!

If this has happened several times, you really should just find a different hotel. People can be allergic to random things, so for the hotel to figure out one particular allergy for one particular guest is really not realistic. Report the issue to them, but find a different place to stay.

Wishing you safe and itch free travels. ;)

It's definitely worth considering that it may have been the soap. Try bringing your own. I do that, as I have mildly sensitive skin-- not severe like a few the people I know, but enough that I don't care to play Wheel Of Fortune with whatever toiletries a hotel happens to provide. I carry two 1-ounce bottles in my 4-1-1 bag, one a shampoo and one a body scrub. A fill of each lasts me at least 10 days on the road.

Benadryl. Take a pill or two, and it will cut down on the itchiness all over. Benadryl is also available in spray form, great when the irritated area is localized.

A slight glimmer of hope this week. After one night, no itching. I avoided using the hotel's shower gel so it is possible that the shower gel was causing the allergic reaction.

However, I've still got another night to go this week.

Thanks for the update.

Agree on finding a different hotel.

How much is your work being affected if you're losing sleep and dealing with an itchy rash all day?

I'm glad that your condition seems to be improving. If the shower soap turns out to be the culprit, that'd be a great outcome. It's so easy to bring one's own bathroom soap and use it in lieu of the stuff the hotel provides. It's way easier to work around that than figuring out how to avoid the laundry soap housekeeping uses on the bedsheets and towels!

Yeah, I'm a bit relieved it was the shower gel. I noticed on the first day it smelled quite strongly and had a deep 'chemical' smell.

I always have my own full set of toiletries that I've used for years and have no issues with.

However, the habit I've got into in the last couple of years is to use the hotel-supplied shower gel and shampoo when I just need to clean my body before sleep, for example, and particularly after an evening gym session. I guess it makes my own toiletries last a bit longer.

It must have been this particular brand that my skin reacted against.

Glad you found the culprit. IMO, it might be worth taking the bottle of hotel gel to a dermatologist and seeing if they can figure out (if the ingredients are listed) or making an informed guess (if they aren't) about what ingredient caused the problem. Then it will be easier to avoid in the future.
