Buying bottles of rum in St Martin - plane problem?
We would like to buy some rum in St. Martin and bring it back to US. Connecting from SXM to CLT to TPA.
How is this handled? Would bottles have to be in checked luggage? Would think it would get broken enroute.

We always bring a few wine mummies with us because wine does have to be packed in checked luggage. Have never had anything spill. This is a great product.

The stores in St Martin should be able to package the bottles to minimize the possibility of breakage. The only problem might be if the proof of the Rum is too high to transport by air. Have heard that, in particular, Bacardi 151 is considered too much for safety.

Assuming you're buying it before the duty free shop inside the airport then, yes, it must be in your checked bag.
My recollection is that there isn't much in the way of "special" rum in St. Martin that cannot be readily acquired in Florida. Is there something specific you're looking for?

I've (and now my whole family after I introduced them) always used a very similar product, The Wine Diaper

I've transported wine, whisky, scotch, bourbon, champagne, beer, olive oil, etc. from all corners of the globe, often with multiple connections and never had a single incident. Once in, I just put them in the center of my luggage with clothing all around it for extra padding.

I would add these, with which I've had great success, at least so far.
