Reminds me of a trip we were on earlier this year between Vegas and JFK on AA in First a colleague of mine ended up sitting in a aisle seat next to what can only be described as a very obnoxious American lady sat by the window. clearly after a few nights in Vegas all he wanted to do was sleep. On boarding his neighbour announced 'I hope you don't want to sleep as I will be up and down regularly', to which he said he did wish to sleep and he would happily swap seats. 'NO' was the answer. Some people have no manners or seat etiquette.

Does seem a bit unhelpful. 'Up and down regularly' seems unnecessary...
I can sympathise with her a little though, if she wants to enjoy the window but be able to get up.

there is actually a knack to getting over the aisle CW passenger without disturbing them, it involves going a bit bow legged and mechanically getting the second leg over (as it were). You don't need to be particularly long limbed to do this either. So in short I don't normally wake the aisle passenger, the possible exceptions is if there are wires everywhere and it's too dark to do it safely.

The other challenge (I find) is when the aisle passsenger crosses their legs atop one another. Still perfectly possible, but adds to the risk of failure somewhat!

I don't get how people can take long flights and not move. I can do about 3 to 4 hours before I absolutely must get up and move or I will start feeling anxious.

When I flew from LHR to LAX in MCE, there was no middle, but the lady in the window sat the entire flight and did not get up one single time.... extraordinary to me.

If I am in the aisle, I have no issues with people getting up. Although once it becomes incessant it becomes annoying. LAX-HNL in F and the guy got up to pee nonstop, and yet he kept going in for more coffee, started getting old when a guy needs out easily 14 times in 6 hours.

I always select an aisle if I can and I have no issue getting up for the middle/window passengers. A small nudge is all that is needed if I'm asleep. I have always been fascinated when my middle/window companions on long-haul flights seem to manage without ever getting up (I'm talking 10+ hour flights... if you don't drink at least 2 litres of water on these flights I don't know how you survive), but I certainly wouldn't want anyone to put themselves into discomfort on account of not disturbing me.

On the occasions when I do not have an aisle, I try to avoid getting up more than is necessary to use the toilet but that's still going to be 2-3 times on a 10-hour flight. I will wait if the aisle passenger is sleeping but I've seen people sleep for 5+ hours, through meal service, and at a certain point I really can't wait any longer.

As someone who always takes the window if possible, I try to get up when the person next to me does, even if I don't need to just yet. (I actually try to race and use a different restroom and try to get back before my seatmate.)

I can't think of any time I've needed to get up when my seatmate was sleeping. If I need to get out, I try to wait for an opportune time, such as when I see that person's movie ending.

Politeness is key but I certainly don't think getting up every 4 hours or so is unreasonable. I'd never try to climb over.

I always choose aisle when I can, knowing that I might have to get up for someone to use the lav. I don't have a problem with that. What does bug me though, is when the seat belt sign is on and someone wants to get up. I figure the sign's on for a reason and I don't want to risk getting banged up.

I always go for the window. Like others, I try to seize on the opportunity to get up when my aisle seatmate has done so.

I'm pretty tall, so for other circumstances I'm generally able to climb past my seatmate without waking him/her or disturbing too much.

Jeannietx Dec 8, 2016 4:25 pm

If you have to go, you have to go. Politely of course.

I am happy to move. Please don't climb over me. I can pretty much guarantee that you are disturbing me *much* more than you think you are by doing so.

Thanks!

One time I had an aisle seat in the center section of a TATL flight with 2-3-2 seating in business class. I was terrified to wake up and see the guy from the middle seat trying to get out by standing on the arm rests of my seat.

This is why I book bulkhead if possible. I can get up in peace and I don't have to get up for others.
