I suppose this will be another nail in the coffin for channel 9.

Although this is "new" it has been around for decades, its essentially ACARS for ATC. Quite frankly I'm surprised it took them this long to think of it.

Correct that this is not new, as far as altitude clearances for Pacific and Atlantic oceanic airspace.
