Emergency Evacuations and luggage

Seems to be a recent trend, having seen photos of passengers leaving the BA flight that evaluated in LA and the Emirates flight that crashed in Dubai, for passengers to take their luggage with them in an emergency evacuation.

It's only sheer luck that Emirates got their passengers out given the video (on the BBC - http://www.bbc.com/news/video_and_au...971855?SThisFB) there is SMOKE in the cabin ffs and they are still grabbing bags!

I travel with my passport and wallet attached to my person at all times.. no need to grab any luggage. If it burns, rather than luggage than me. If it doesn't I can collect it later!

Why are people so stupid????

Here's a quote from the thread on the EK incident which seems to cover it quite well. Unless you ( or I) have been in the situation you have no idea how you (or I) will react.

Perhaps some people put their passports, prescription medication, and other travel essentials in their carry-on bags, instead of in the pockets of their clothes or otherwise attached to themselves.

If you are concerned about the small possibility of evacuation, it may be a good idea to put that stuff where it will stay attached to you if you have to evacuate.

No excuses. By delaying the evacuation of others regardless of the reason you are endangering other peoples lives.

Maybe it's time to add a bit more about emergency evacuations to the pre-flight spiel. "In the event of an emergency evacuation, leave all carry-on bags on the airplane."

I have heard that on some airlines. Maybe when they do the certification testing for the maximum occupancy of an aircraft they should include a percentage of the test subjects taking or attempting to take their carry on luggage.

Just as bad someone has their phone out and recording it!

You want to go where? Aug 4, 2016 7:13 pm

From what I can see that person could not go anywhere if they wanted to, might as well film,

So if he would not record it, how the world would know that people again rushed towards overhead bins?

That's in EVERY safety briefing I have ever heard. Every one. For the last 20 years or so!

That's a fair point. I've never had to evacuate a plane, but I when the plane begins its descent I move my phone, wallet and passport back into my pockets and put my shoes back on. I hope that if I'm ever in that situation I'll have the wherewithal to think clearly and leave everything else behind.

Those items always stay with me on the plane so that I don't have to find them in an emergency situation.

Makes me angry too. those few seconds could be all it takes to die. I don't care if I don't have my passport. All that matters is I get off a burning plane alive. The rest of the situation, like no passport, medication or belongings will sort it self out.
