Good Spots for a weekend getaway
Anyone have any suggestion for a fun travel spot I can hit up on a Friday morning and come back late Sunday night?
Was thinking maybe Dallas or Savannah. Any other ideas? |
it would help to know where you're starting from ... those probably don't work too well from Fargo or Frankfurt

From Chicago, you really have a wealth of options....just depends on what you are looking for?
Beach? Food? Arts? Sports? Easy flights to everything from NYC to LAS to MIA to ??? I also wouldn't rule out a quick Europe juant, depending on your interests and wallet. Speaking of which, miles or cash? |
I have a big Europe trip coming up next week so looking more for fun weekend spots in the U.S. Maybe some spots that are underrated.
Food, History, Culture, Architecture are things I usually look for in a quick weekend getaway. I have a ton of SW points and gift cards so airfare will be free. I'll do cash on the hotels unless there is a cheap high quality Hyatt nearby and I'll use my gift cards. Savannah has a couple high quality Hyatt's I believe which is one reason I was looking at it. |
Off the top of my head…
Memphis, Nashville or Austin – BBQ, Blues and warm nights Traverse City – Breweries, wineries and a beach |
Did Austin last summer and had a blast!! That's exactly the kind of place I like (delicious unique food (i.e. Franklin's BBQ) and history (LBJ Library).

Fly WN to Indy (Hyatt Regency). Drive to Columbus; soak in the design of many public and private buildings. Dinner back in Indy at St. Elmos or similar. |
I would say New Orleans or Atlanta, but not during the hot humid summer.
For architecture, Cleveland has the cool art museum that opens its wings. Without knowing the WN route map, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Santa Fe, Portland/Seattle, Boston, Montreal/Quebec City, Los Angeles, Toronto, Vancouver,..... |
I looked at Vancouver (heard it's beautiful) but it doesn't seem like there is a ton to do on the historical side. More of an outdoorsy sporty place which is fine.
I have been thinking Philadelphia could be a good bet. Gotta get a Philly Cheesesteak and take a picture with Rocky. I did NOLA last September, that was fun! |
I like Santa Fe, but there are no direct flights there from Chicago. It's beautiful in the fall. Taos is great for skiing in the winter. Rhode Island (Newport in particular) is a beautiful destination for the summer. Martha's Vineyard / Cape Cod also doable for a longer weekend. Miami's architecture and art scene is very unique as well, a good place to visit in colder seasons, but more expensive then as well.

Yeah I know my username will make it seem biased (I'm actually a US citizen from the NYC area), but for food, history, culture, and architecture, you can't go wrong with Montreal! Plenty of museums, nightlife, places to eat, and festivals all summer long!

Based on what you've posted I'd highly recommend Savannah or Charleston. Good food/bars/music scene, southern charm, close by beaches. Similar to New Orleans except not nearly as much of a drunken sh--show. (still plenty of drinking opportunities, but none that in your face sloppy tourist vibe that you get on Bourbon street)

Montreal...
...no question a top notch weekend get away spot.
Great food, one of the oldest cities in NA. There is some kind of festival every weekend, just don't go during the F1 Grand Prix weekend it's an animal act. |
