I don't understand why all airlines don't allow the premium-cabin passengers to choose their meal 24 or more hours in advance. You would think that would reduce the amount the airline needs to overstock on the flight, and you'd have happier customers.
AA does this. Very simple webpage. Everybody wins. |

We don't usually fly in business too often but have recently started doing so more and more. Usually I book pretty close to the front but due to a last minute change, on yesterday's flight with AF, we were in the last row of business.
For the first meal service, when they got to us, they said somebody had pre-ordered a special meal but obviously didn't take it or something, because they were out of the only meal choice and they were wanting to give me this special meal instead. I wasn't overly happy with this but they did manage to find a nearly identical meal, from premium economy I think (since there were no salt/pepper shakers and the salad was literally only lettuce). For the second meal service, where there were three options, both my partner's and my preferred choice were out, so we had to go for one of the other options. Is this a curse of flying in the last row of business, that they run out of options? I never had this happen before since I am usually at the front. I get they maybe can't take 30 of everything, but given how much we paid in cash for these tickets - it wasn't paid by employers or miles - it left a bit of a bitter taste, you could say! Sometimes booking towards the front of the cabin can help. Most airlines have their own criteria for asking. Some will ask their elites first. Some paid first. |

The only way to prevent this from happening is to have every single one of the meal choices for each and every passenger in business. It would be prohibitive in terms of space on the plane, food cost, etc.
I'm surprised more don't. Unlike Y, where demand outstrips capacity and airlines don't really have to try, there's actually some decent competition for paid J/F traffic. This simple differentiator doesn't cost the airline hardly anything. |

?? Why weren't you allowed to choose seats in business class? I understand that you couldn't do it with AA but a quick phone call to BA would allow you to choose seats.
Only elites get those preallocations or those willing to pay a fee. And on codeshares not even that may work. AA has nothing to do with this. |
