I did a RTW in F for all of the long haul flights, AA, JL, QF, QR, and ET. I did dress 'up' a bit - nice jacket, pressed pants, collared shirt, nice shoes. I can safely state that with the exception of AA, I was not treated any better or worse than other passengers in F (sweatpants to pajama pants to jeans/t-shirts to suits). The AA exception was notable as it seemed as if there were many regulars, maybe some non-rev, DFW-NRT, and the FAs were certainly giving them far more attention than I and I by far was dressed the best.

Age and weight are factors, too. As proudelitist said, it shouldn't be that way but it is. When I was a thin, tall, young woman with blond hair down to me rear end, I could wear tattered jeans and a old BVD t-shirt and flip flops and still look great and still get the maitre d's attention. Now, in my mid-60’s, I don’t look great in that stuff anymore, in fact I look like a hobo and even I wouldn't seat me at the window table of the restaurant. My daughter, otoh, can pull that outfit off just fine because she's tall and young and blond and gorgeous. On her it's style. On me, it's sloppy.

Comfort comes first. Even when I fly J or F. But I try to go somewhat stylish...

No it is not necessary to dress well to travel in first class, the goal is above all to be in his comfort for the trip. It happens that some people stare at you when you're really in casual clothes but do not pay attention
