Checking box (with golf club inside) as checked baggage?
 
Hi guys,
What are your thoughts on checking a box containing a brand new golf club as checked baggage?
I'm bringing my dad a putter as a gift.

I plan on traveling with AA and LAN from JFK (with a connection at MIA) to SCL with this box as checked luggage.

• Would there be any complications?
• Are there any tips for this sort of baggage? (Travel insurance, etc.)
• What about customs? This golf club is about $120 usd.

You're automatically covered so don't worry about it. Just pack it carefully (maybe a couple of pieces of PVC pipe as braces inside the box) and check it as regular luggage.

Just curious as to what is automatically covered?
Does AA reimburse you if items in your baggage are stolen?

Don't know about AA, but UA policy is

Liability for the loss of, damage to or delay in delivery of a Passenger’s personal property, including Baggage, when such personal property or Baggage has been checked (unless a higher value is declared in advance and additional charges are paid and personal property is not otherwise excludable), is limited to USD 3,400 per Ticketed Passenger. Passenger will be responsible for documenting and proving the actual value of the loss.
Some airlines limit liability for sporting equipment. Check with AA.

You can buy extra liability insurance for something like $1 for every $100 of valuation.

As it is an international itinerary the Montreal Convention applies, limiting liability to a lower number, though still more than the value of the property in this case.

I've got travel insurance and it covers $500. It's an incredibly meager amount.

Does American Airlines honor the Montreal Convention? AFAIK, their policy with regards to stolen items in checked baggage is pretty crappy.

Agreed. I would try to fill the box with "stuff" (paper, clothing) to fill the void around the putter. If it comes with a putter cover, definitely put that on, too. The less the club can move around inside the box, the better.

I have just traveled from New Zealand to Singapore then on to Malaysia with two new clubs (hybrid and a fairway wood) as check-in luggage. I put plenty of bubble wrap and foam padding around the clubs, packed firmly inside the original boxes and they made it in one piece. Didn't buy insurance and no issues with customs anywhere on the trip. The only slight complication was the boxes came out of the odd-sized luggage belt, not the regular belt.
