Walk-Friendly Airport list?
Is there a list of Airports that are -what I call- walk-friendly, i.e. where it is possible to walk from terminal to terminal?
A bit of pet peeve of mine, as I much prefer to walk as opposed to be jammed in a bus or train. Some airports offer both options, others don't offer the option of walking at all and 'force' you to take a train/bus, etc. I thought it would be neat to have a list that shows which airports fit which category. Not sure if this already exists, or if not, if I am the only one that would be interested in this? After flying (& sitting) for 14 hours, it is perplexing why most will use the escalators, when there are stairs. Following pictures are from EWR and HKG (IIRC) on recent visits: http://yopu.com/P50923_2.jpg http://yopu.com/P50815_2.jpg Also, I just recently discovered that at EWR the walk from the terminal to the rental cars is actually VERY short (especially from A), and quite pleasant, if the weather isn't playing up. If such a walk-friendly airport list doesn't yet exist, would anyone be interested in creating one? |
Definitely SNA/John Wayne Airport in Orange County, CA! Walkable, all one level, and perfect for walking between terminals.

I enjoy walking around airports, especially as most of my trips involve connections. It helps to get the blood moving a bit between flights.
Regarding the escalators, I always use them when I have a rollerbag, even when just walking around. Just easier...and safer...that way. |
Here are airports I've walked to/from:

Basically in almost all European airports you can walk from Terminal to terminal. You might need to go land-side and it might not be a pleasant walk but I'm not aware they will force you to take an airtrain or shuttle bus anywhere.
I guess it makes much more sense to list airports which are an exception to that rule than white-listing... |
In terms of international airports, I believe HKG and MUC qualify.

DFW. But you may have a long walk if you have to go to the other side of the airport!

ORD for all but T5.
|
Definitely NOT DEN.

MEL is a great compact airport

Well, at LAX you can walk from terminal to terminal, which I had to do once - from T2 to T7 and I would not say that it was enjoyable by any means.
On other hand, walking inside the terminal at Changi Airport or Narita is completely different thing. |

SFO is one of the most compact large airports anywhere. Too bad it cannot all be accomplished airside, but it is one loop. You do need to go up/down escalators for the int'l terminal to get to T-1 and T-3. I don't know why anyone other than the most mobility impaired would ever consider the airtrain to transfer terminals. Walking is a lot faster.

A few I can think of off-hand...
